Let's revisit our expectations before the season - We overachieved

Before the season began, I was waffling between 8-8 and 9-7 with no real thoughts about a deep playoff run. I actually was parroting my mantra of "anything short of a deep playoff run and Garrett should be gonzo" because I truly felt it wouldn't happen and entered this season thinking him getting fired was a real possibility.

Welp.. we are now stuck in the middle. He took us deep into the playoffs. Is this considered deep? I guess that's debatable. Does Jerry extend him? Lord.. The thought makes me cringe.

Anyways.. I digress... As a team, we did overachieve to a huge extent this year. Our team is very young too. One of the youngest teams in the NFL...

One thing I never felt down the stretch this year was that the team would snatch my heart from my chest. You guys know that old feeling we have all endured over the past 10 to 12 seasons. Those young guys battle to the very end and up until the very end of that game last night I felt we still had a chance.

But lackluster strategy, situational preparation, and play calling will take you down. That's reality. We have to get better in several areas including the OC.

Being young only means thats more careers for Garrett to waste and more years to disappoint this fanbase that has been waiting over 20 years for a return to glory. Fire him.

Unfortunately, my expectations for next year are about the same when I hear the state of the Cowboys speak from the front office.

Stay faithful. Anything can happen. I remain faithful until I hear Garrett has officially been extended.

He's gonna get extended. Linehan is probably out and Marinelli will move into a support role for our DC, Kris Richard.......whose first order of business will be to sign some run stuffing DTs. We will never beat the rams with this DL.

I predicted 9-7 before the season started. Then adjusted that to 8-8 when Fredbeard went down. So yes, this team overachieved this year in my mind.
In the end, unfortunately, this year's overachieving will probably just mean a new contract for a HC that should have lost his job a long time ago; more delusion of grandeur for the upcoming season by the owner/GM, and probably a follow-up underachieving season in 2019.
All of these "single score" victories this year can easily turn into "single score" defeats with this coaching staff next year. Odds are it probably will.
This is not an exciting team to watch either. It plays hard on both sides of the ball usually. It runs the ball well usually, and it plays good defense usually.
But these JG coached teams routinely shoot themselves in the foot with stupid mistakes and the Special Teams have not been special in....well, forever.
This Cowboys' offensive philosophy and execution looks to be a Ford Fusion Hybrid in the new Lamborghini world of the NFL. There is just no creativeness to this offense.
I wish I could be more optimistic for 2019, but I'm afraid that this time next year we'll be discussing the same ol' same ol' because we will still have the same ol' owner/GM, HC and OC.

I can live with this scenario.

Pretty sure I
  • Had us at 10-6 and playing in a wildcard game (Didnt predict playoff opponents in preseason)
  • Then picked us to beat Seattle 24-23 in the Wildcard in this forum
  • Then picked us to lose to the Rams, 30-26 in the divisional

So it went very close to expected, this year at least

Things change and I don’t applaud them for the expectations before the season.

The Chiefs didn’t expect to be the best team in the AFC. They will not be patting themselves on the back if they lose to New England at Arrowhead next week.

We wasted an opportunity.

Going into the season I figured this was a 6 or 7 win team. Making the playoffs was a surprise. Falling flat in the playoffs was not.

Had Dallas going 8-8 at best. The defense was way better than I expected and the schedule was easier than I expected.

Turned out to be a good season.

We beat the Seahawks and were 7.5 underdogs to a team that beat us by 8. Is that falling flat?

Fred going down basically sealed the fact of this team not going far in the playoffs. I said before the playoffs started that we would win one or two games in the playoffs, the big picture is that this is still a very young team.

A lot of people thought the defense would still be mediocre at best too.

There is just too many factors and you have to change expectations almost weekly in this nfl. Nobody knew Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith we’re going to be that good.

Not really. It just made the cooper trade tolerable. Giving up a 20 something pick instead of a top 15. Completely unsuccessful season.

Defense is mediocre. The only bright spot was the win against the taints. There’s nobody on this defense I know will show up every game. It’s more just hoping someone does

If this defense was mediocre all season Dallas wouldve won like 4-5 games.
