What is your take? We always spent our off time dissecting our own film and looking for weaknesses. We also went to several camps and clinics. What do you think our staff does? Do you think Garrett is trying to learn new things? I'm sure they are doing the draft thing right now, but where do they go for new ideas? Not trying to be a smart butt, just wondering. It's not like he can go to the Belichek school of coaching.

I think they evaluate the players first. Then other teams players. Then evaluate themselves as coaches, but also how they did in games. What could they have done different or better. Critique plays, if the right call or not.

I do think they have some down time as well. It is not like they need to spend 12 hours a day doing this all the time.

Believe or not, I was a HS coach and took ZERO time off. Spring ball, 7 on 7, summer conditioning ...it never ended. Literally, year round football. These pros probably don't have to work as much as HS and college coaches.

Having never coached, I’d like to think that Garrett, or any HC, would be working on preparing for the draft and exploring ways — new and/or old — to maximize the talent/skills of his current roster, going forward.

Other than the above, ain’t got a clue.

I think they are "in the office" most days. But they do take a break for a few weeks ors so between the last mini camp and the start of TC. As I remember them saying they are taking their summer vacation or whatever the call it.

But I think during the off season they are in there everyday, maybe even some weekends. But not the 12 hour days like during TC and the season, or other times in the off season. Maybe sometimes 8 to 10 hours, maybe sometimes 4 to 6 hours, if that much.

Interesting question though.

We put in 90 hour weeks for 17 weeks plus playoffs. I can't imagine what these dudes work. The hungry ones probably sleep in the office. Lol

He would be reviewing tape of this past season and grading out current players, he would be working out players and interviewing players at the combine and as players visit ahead of the draft. Once draft is over he will be getting ready with rookie OTA then vets will start coming in for OTA then will be getting ready for Oxnard. He will also be working with Moore as they make changes to the offense.

Garrett, is reminding JJ about the pics he has in the safe deposit box,
Nussmeier, is wondering whom he even has to coach.
Kitna, wondering how he can coach a QB that is better than he ever was.

Not much of an off-season for our staff

Season ends in late November, December if we have a bowl game.
Season end til February - January national coaching convention, nonstop recruiting - home and school visits, campus visits (official and unofficial), combines
Feb to late March - film review, camps, clinics, game planning
March & April - Spring ball
May to July - summer conditioning program, staff meetings in July
August - Fall camp
September - season starts

Fun fact, at my level, assistant coaches only get paid during the season despite the "work" being year round.

jimmy Johnson gave his coaches 30 days off with the goal being to get refreshed and when they returned, tell him what was needed to make the team better. according to jimmy, nothing stayed the same. didn't matter if the improvement would come from offense, defense, or special teams. just figure out what was needed to get better. I hope this is what our coaches are doing. figuring out how we get better.
