I think Dallas has good depth on both lines, which is important because games are often won or lost there.

See the Rams playoff game, where Dallas got whupped on both of them.

I can never argue with picks that beef up our interiors. The Hill pick gives us a solid 5 man rotation at DT and also allows Crawford to move outside if needed. Maliek has also been chronically injured lately, so it’s good cover for him.

McGovern is more of a pick for the future but it’s wise to get prepared for Lael’s imminent departure. A lot of people are speculating that Williams will be moved to RT next year but I’m thinking Martin is the more likely guy to be moved.
Just curious, why do you think Martin will be the guy to move to RT?

I know competition is good bud we have so many DE's and DT's now that we will be cutting good players or trying to stash guys on the practice squad. This is o.k. if you don't have severe weakness at other positions. We do not have adequate safety's and we still don't.

Lawrence
Quinn
Gregory
Armstrong
Taco
Heyder
Jackson
Jelks

AT DE. How many can they carry? Who are the odd men out?

Crawford
Collins
HIll
Covington
Woods
Ross
Wise

at DT. You can get some cap savings by cutting Crawford but he is one of the more dependable players on the team.

I feel like they will try to stash the guys they just drafted on the practice squad and they are good enough to get poached so we will get nothing in return.

Must have initially missed your post when scrolling bro. What you say here makes a lot of sense and specifically supported by the actual d lineman numbers that the team carries on Sundays.

This numbers game should make for some serious training camp, as well as in season competition for the right to wear a game day jersey.

Hopefully, like you said, the guys who do go to the practice squad aren't immediately poached by other teams.
Nice perspective bud.

6 is possible but could squeeze 7, if warranted.

My ideal roster for this team has 10 DL.

RDE: Tyrone Crawford, Robert Quinn, Dorance Armstrong
NT: Antwaun Woods, Christian Covington
UT: Maliek Collins, Tyrsten Hill
LDE: DeMarcus Lawrence, Taco Charlton, Kerry Hyder

Reserve/Suspended: Randy Gregory

Crawford and Hyder can also play DT on passing downs, that might be Hyder's only role, if he makes the cut.

There's optimism that Gregory will get reinstated, but there's no telling if or when that might happen.

DE Joe Jackson, DE Jalen Jelks, DL Shakir Soto, UT Daniel Ross and DT Daniel Wise are all looking for a seat.

Performance, injuries and needs elsewhere on the roster and other teams' will sort it all out.

I feel like they will try to stash the guys they just drafted on the practice squad and they are good enough to get poached so we will get nothing in return.
It's possible.

Players have to clear waivers before they can be signed to the Practice Squad, which is a bigger risk than seeing them poached at a later date. Teams often have agreements to bring up their practice squad player or bump his salary to the minimum if another club wants to sign him.

All 32 teams worry about getting their guys re-signed to the practice squad, but the truth is, they all tend to like their own guys a lot more than others'.

Many will be kept via Injured Reserve, although most times the injuries aren't of the season ending variety. The NFL still doesn't police this as hard as they should.

Offensive Line
Tackles - Smith, Collins, Fleming and potentially Williams or McGovern
Guards - Martin, Su'a Filo, Williams, Looney and McGovern
Centers - Frederick, Looney and McGovern

The contracts for Su'a Filo, Looney, and Collins all expire next season. If Collins plays really well this year, the Cowboys are going to get a Compensatory pick for him in 2021, because they won't be able to afford to keep him. Similarly, Looney played well enough last year to garner a lot of free agent interest as a center when his contract expires. Su'a Filo is a former 33rd overall pick who might revitalize his career in Dallas, and like Jonathan Cooper two years ago, land a decent contract with another team.

McGovern can play all 5 positions, and has better arm length (34-1/4") for the tackle position than either Williams (33") or La'el Collins (33-1/4"). The Cowboys signed Fleming to a 2 year free agent contract, which pays him like a backup in 2019, but like a starter in 2020. Even if all three of them leave, and Fleming becomes the starter at Right Tackle, McGovern could develop into a "super-sub" who can back up all 5 spots. Then, when Fleming's contract expires in 2020, McGovern could slide into one of the starting positions in his 3rd season. Or, he could potentially win a starting job sooner. The pick of McGovern.

Bottom line: The Cowboys are now 9-deep at Oline, and are set up to withstand the departures of Free agents a year from now. And they still have developmental prospects in Jake Campos and Adam Redmond.

Defensive Line
Defensive End - DeMarcus Lawrence, Robert Quinn, Randy Gregory, Kerry Hyder, Dorance Armstrong, Taco Charlton
Defensive Tackle - Tyrone Crawford, Maliek Collins, Christian Covington, Trysten Hill, Antwaun Woods, Daniel Ross

With Randy Gregory suspended, the Cowboys have a legitimate 5-man rotation at DE, with Crawford and Covington as the 6th and 7th guys who can play DE. Quinn will be backup by by Hyder and Armstrong, while Lawrence will be backed up by Charlton. If Gregory gets reinstated this year, the Cowboys will have to make some decisions on who to keep at DE, but that is a good problem to have. Gregory had 7 sacks in his last 9 games, and could push Quinn for the starting job at RDE, because he's better against the run than Quinn.

At Tackle, there will be a competition between Crawford, Hill and Collins for the starting 3T position. Covington and Woods will vie for the starting 1T position, with Daniel Ross pushing them both.

I like the effort in shoring up the DL, but unfortunately we continue to make the same mistake over and over in drafting the quick penetrating DT that can make splash plays everyone once in a while but can’t anchor and effect the run game.

As long as we continue to draft Collins / Hill type players out LBs basically have to play perfect for us to be good against the run.

Makes no sense to me.

Given the struggles at keeping a good rotation despite injuries, I like your assessment of the line's depth. The FO is getting it - the line needs to be deep on both sides.

Excellent point. And it's this position thats neglected (A true 1T)along with not acquiring a ball hawking, rangy FS that annually adds to the mystery that is Marinelli.

It does beg the question. It is a rather one dimensional plan and depends heavily on the LBs to pick up the slack.

Really only confident in Lawrence, Quinn, and somewhat Crawford. Most of these players were part of the problem on the defensive side of the ball against the Rams.

I need to see this rotation in action before I'm excited.
Didn’t take you long.

Good post.

I’m a real fan of how they invest in the trenches constantly now. It’s not always perfect or pretty, but the result is 2 very good lines.
Exactly. If you’re strong up the middle, great things will follow.

Marinelli likes the DL rotation.

Did Landry do this?
