Whenever some blowhard tries to strip Jerry of credit for our success in the ‘90s, I ask them one question that immediately shuts them up:
“Who hired Jimmy?”
Exactly.
The Landry firing, as ugly and mishandled as it was, had to happen.
I’ll always give Jerry credit for having the cojones to gamble on hiring his former Arkansas line-mate, Jimmy Johnson, and then letting Jimmy run the football side of the business. Considering Jerry had just spent every penny he had to acquire the Cowboys, the Jimmy hire showed a LOT of confidence and trust.
Wish the two of them could’ve stayed together a few more seasons, but big success usually takes big ego, and that pair of JJs had ego in spades.
