It's very obvious very early that a QB can play or not. This CAN be decided in the first season.
1. Tom Brady had it enough to automatically back up Drew Bledsoe right away.
2. Tony Romo was the best QB on the field his rookie season......Darren Woodson
3. Dak Prescott no matter how many haters, has it and had it his rookie year
4. Cooper Rush showed early he has it to at least be a capable backup and lead this team to at least a 500 record if anything should happen to Dak.

Mike White does not have it. It's very obvious, he should be cut and we should not waste a roster spot on a 3rd QB. Scan the waiver wire for a practice squad QB.

Kurt Warner and Rick Gannon career arcs say otherwise. Some people take time to develop. It's not uncommon in sports. Hell, Sandy Koufax was mediocre his first seven years before he finally broke out. If he wasn't a lefty he might not have hung on. The Phillies almost gave up on Mike Schmidt after he batted .196 his rookie year--now he is widely considered to be the best 3rd baseman in MLB history. Maybe Mike White doesn't have it, maybe he flat out sucks, but to make an all-encompassing blanket statement about young players is a mistake GM's in all sports have paid for with their jobs.

MIke White is going to be on the practice squad IMO, and it's ridiculous to make a blanket statement on a player that's been here one year with very limited game action......QB's need time to develop as do most rookies.....it's a huge jump from college to the pros, he's a fifth round pick, give him some time......

Drew Brees was replaced in SD not 3 years after they drafted him 32nd overall.

Eli Manning resembled a trash compactor his first year, a heck of a lot more than he does now.

Anyone remember Jared Goff’s rookie year? Troy Aikman’s? Brett Favre’s? Even Wentz didn’t set the world on fire before being runner up for MVP the very next year.

There are dozens more. I would counter argue and QB is the hardest position in team sports, and a learning curve is fully expected. The guys who come out of the gate running are the exceptions, not the rule.

Actually, history is littered with exceptions to this assertion but I don't expect Mike White will be one of them.

While I agree with the above posters that many if not most NFL QBs need time and experience to develop, when/where will Mike White get said experience while playing 3rd-string for DC?

He didn’t play a reg-sea down last year and, barring catastrophe, won’t play one this year.

The question is, are there better backup options than White or Cooper Rush; say, a veteran who at least has played some meaningful football in the league?

McCown would’ve been a viable pick up but the Eagles got him already. I’d rather have him than White or Rush.

But so many did it with Dak before he even hit 3 years? That still tickles me. Some are so anxious to hate on Dak all the while casting aside any hope that he might just take us back to the promise land. Hatred over logic.

Yeah but even though those guys had bad seasons they showed potential with some throws they made.

Romo sat for 3 seasons. Was prob gonna get cut if not for Quincy Carter's failed test & release. White has been here 1 season. So myself i'm gonna give him more time to show. He'll prob be on the PS.

In the preseason? Brett Favre was the worst player in the nfl his rookie year. Atlanta traded him because they already thought he was a bust.

Sean Lee beat me to it by a minute. I said to myself who is this guy I liked him since his first preseason game against Seattle. Yep Prescott is a winner

Mike White has no internal clock in his head and it just looks like he is clueless as to where he should go with the football given the defense the other team is playing.

He’s an absolute mess and a big project just to get to Cooper Rush’s level.

Romo was going to get cut because of the depth chart, troll... not because he couldn’t play. He always played well when he got in the game. White seems to lack basic QB instincts. While there are definitely exceptions, I think generally speaking I agree with the OP.

Kurt Warner went to a small college and even though he waa signed by Green Bay on graduation, he got a freak injury/illness before training camp started - so never got to his chance.

The first real chance he got was years later in NFL Europe. Reports from NFLE training camp at that time was that he was a Pro Bowl caliber QB - even before he'd played a competitive game. People werw completely blown away with his ability. While I agree that some QBs need development, Warner is not a good example.

I get what you are saying but to let you know Tom Brady did not automatically backup Bledsoe when he came into the league. He was 4th on the depth chart I believe and the two in front of him got injured in preseason and Brady made the most of the opportunity. You have to give Belicheck credit for seeing what he saw in Brady as his own owner Kraft did not even know who Tom Brady was (thought he was Kyle Brady the TE). Just like Walsh did with Rice when he kept on dropping balls in first season with the Niners. I hoping Dak has the same career path as those two HOF.

I'm looking at all these backup quarterbacks throughout the league. And I'm saying to myself not bad young man. And then I'm looking at rush and white. And thinking how do we not pick somebody else up. Like the bottom of the barrel you ask me

That means we had better players than him. So I agree with you. You just couldn't play as well as the people in front of him at that particular time.
