I assume Phillip's got cut due to Gifford making it/not being that badly injured?

They also auditioned for 31 other teams. Just because they got cut here doesn't mean they’re out of the NFL, but I understand what you mean.

If Gifford makes it, I have a suspicion it is just a technicality they have to do to keep place him on IR to return. Phillips could then be recalled.

I was actually thinking that the injury designation might be a bit of a favor to him for the role that he's had for the past few years. This is the end of his NFL career, and I can totally see the Cowboys giving him a bit of extra cash as a thank you of sorts.

Looks to me like over the pre season games and practices they had too many young guys stepping and making plays they felt comfortable going cheaper at the position. Illoka's still a NFL caliber guy, he'll grab a spot elsewhere.

That won't happen until *after* they've cleared the waiver wire.
