How many games do you think Bret Maher will cost us this season?

I’m setting the imaginary line at 2 games.

Thots?

I think we got spoiled to bailey's greatness for so many years. Kickers see unpredictable - not really any better options out there. In saying that, he definitely will miss an important kick that probably costs us a game

Last season he hit game winners vs Alt and Det. Does he get credit for those? How many game winners does he hit this season?

Exactly.

He cost us zero games last season. Even hit a 62 yarder that would help get us into OT against the Eagles.

Maher is a great kicker considering he only counts 580k against the cap.

Don't get the hate for him.

Because as Jwooten15 said Bailey spoiled us. There for a while he was money but now even he is no longer money.

Are you really that sensitive?

I bet you believe in the healing power of positivity.

It's just a dumb time to bring up the subject considering:
  • He cost us zero games last season
  • Made 2 game winning field goals in 2018
  • Hit a 62 yarder that helped get the team into OT against the Eagles; and
  • Has not missed a single kick so far in 2019.

Compared to what?

Let's work through this.
Given the distribution of Maher's attempts last year, he missed 1.53 more FGs from 30-39 than you would expect from an average kicker and 1.39 more FGs from 40-49. He made 1.53 more FGs from 50+ than you would expect from the average kicker, and 0.90 more XPs. Add it all up, and (again given his distribution of attempts), he cost us 3.3 points versus what we would expect from an average kicker. That's 0.2 points per game, but it probably makes more sense to think of it as:

Maher missed one field goal that an average kicker would have made.

The next question is, what's the likelihood that that missed field goal costs a game? Dallas played 7 games (including playoffs) decided by 3 points or less, so maybe you'd expect him to cost us as much as 7/18 (39%) of one game. But leaguewide, only 29% of games are decided by 3 points or less, so we'd expect that number to go down this year (especially since we already have two games under our belt that didn't come down to that margin).

So that's my answer. Maybe Maher costs us 29% of one game over the course of the season.

Well, let's see, as far as costing us zero games last season, he did miss a 52-yarder at the end of the 20-17 loss to the Commanders, so you could argue he cost us the chance at overtime (a 50-50 proposition), so that would be 50% of a loss. Except, of course, that all kickers miss some 50+-yarders. And, um, Maher was fantastic from 50+, way better than the average kicker: his problems were from 30-49. So no, he really didn't cost us that game.
