Calls I would make tomorrow (and why)

Patrick Peterson at 12.3 mil isn't that bad considering the value for corners has shot up from 12mil some time ago.

That being said, haven't followed his play in years.

I'm not suggesting we make all these acquisitions; only suggesting these are the calls/inquiries I would make tomorrow as the GM of the Cowboys to try to improve the roster.

Call #1
New York Jets - Jamal Adams. The Jets seem to be subtly following the Dolphins tanking philosophy (shopping Leonard Williams and Robby Anderson). There are very few times in the NFL when a young, premier player is available and is a position of need for you. Jamal Adams is the safety this fan base has been clamoring for since Darren Woodson. He's 24, would have a $3.5M cap hit next season and has a 5th year option for 2021. My guess is his value is somewhere between Minkah Fitzpatrick (plus a 4th and a 7th for a 1st, 5th, and 6th) and Jalen Ramsey (two 1st round picks and a 4th). Nice things are expensive and if the Jets aren't being unreasonable, Adams would be an ideal solution to this defense's Achilles heel.

Call #2
Hold the line Joe Douglas - Leonard Williams. The Cowboys allegedly already inquired about Williams and likely felt the price was too high. I'd call again and monitor the situation all the way to the Tuesday deadline. The Jets are looking beyond this year and getting a pick or two now beats the 2021 compensatory pick they will get for Leonard Williams.

Call #3
Tampa Bay Buccaneers - O.J. Howard. This is a move for now and later. He would be a great complimentary piece to the weapons Dak has now. We like 12 personnel and Howard is a match-up issue and would be valuable on seam routes. He'd also allow the team to have a ready-to-go #1 TE if Witten decides to hang them up after this year.

Call #4
Denver Broncos - Justin Simmons. The Broncos are 2-6 and are most likely looking towards next season. Simmons is a talented safety. He's been targeted 21 times and only given up 10 completions (47.6% rate), and has 2 picks and 38 tackles before today's game. We supposedly loved him in the 2016 draft and ended up taking Charles Tapper 4 picks after the Broncos took Simmons. He is a pending free agent so that's one more contract to be worked out, but like Adams, he would address a weakness for the team.

Call #5
Arizona Cardinals - Patrick Peterson. Okay, calm down and read the whole thing before replying. Peterson is still an elite cornerback. When you have a shutdown corner, it gives you so much flexibility defending the rest of the offensive weapons. He's under contract for next season ($12.3M) so he's not just a one-year rental. He will be an expensive acquisition though. The Cardinals aren't going anywhere but they love Pat Pete and will not move on from him easily. My biggest motivation for this phone call lies elsewhere. I would love to add a player of his caliber but more than anything, my intent is to drive up the price for the Eagles. I don't want to see him in Philadelphia, but if they have their heart set on him, I want them to give up as much as possible.

Again, I'm not saying make ALL these trades. I'm saying kick the tires and see what it would take. None of these are dire so there is zero need to overpay.

Bennett was a minimal risk move. You're taking a chance on a proven veteran who the Patriots felt was not needed in their quest to make yet another Super Bowl run. He was mainly acquired to address the need created by Tyrone Crawford's injury, so in essence was maintaining the talent level. We need to make a move to improve the talent or I fear we will come up short of our ultimate goal.

Thats why you're the king. Nailed it.

At this stage in the season, just roll with who you have. Keep the draft picks. Unless some guy is cheap like Bennett, I would forget it.

Probably. This team isn't close enough to contending to want to give up draft capital for a veteran quick fix.

Hypothetically, would anybody NOT trade a boat load of picks in the coming years for a Superbowl this year?

Adams will never happen.
Williams is a move I'd pursue.
Simmons would be a nice grab too.
PP is not happening either.

I'll just say, no thanks to OJ Howard.

5. Trade deadline. We’re going dive deeper into this in the MAQB. For now, a hot list of names to watch could legitimately be moved, for the right price over the next 36 hours: Jets WR Robby Anderson, Falcons DE Vic Beasley, Browns CB TJ Carrie, Falcons LB DeVondre Campbell, Bengals TE Tyler Eifert, Broncos CB Chris Harris, Browns WR Rashard Higgins, Commanders CB Josh Norman, Eagles OT Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Jets DL Leonard Williams, Colts DB Quincy Wilson.

I’d mention, too, that the market for tight ends has been fairly hot, so I’d bank of the Falcons getting calls on Austin Hooper, the Bucs on O.J. Howard and the Ravens on Hayden Hurst. I just think the price might wind up being too high for any suitor to bite.

It would be interesting to see what the Browns want for WR Higgins? I thought he would be a good pickup in a trade at the beginning of the season. Higgins is an UFA next year. I would be tempted to trade a player, not a draft pick, for him. I am guessing the Browns would want Looney or Su'a since their OL looks like a train wreck.

I'd make a crying begging call to all the possible coaching candidates to come in as soon as possible.

No Phone Calls "tomorrow (and why)"

The month of November is the most critical of the '19 season with several tough opponents coming up, and with three of their five games being on the road, that doesn't make it any easier to deal with. Both the front office & team are focused on a Superbowl run and not worrying about who they wish to add to the roster.
