This is pretty misleading, Austin called for a fair catch almost immediately after the ball was kicked so the Vikings coverage was mostly jogging down the field.
The only explanation is that is what the coach told him to do.

Nearly as depressing as the Demarco Murray fumble in Green Bay with nothing but open grass in front of him :(

Typical Garrett move to force the fair catch AND not even attempt a block on the punt.

Unbelievable. That was a house call. Only the Cowboys I swear smh.

If this is the case, this thread is kinda moot. Plenty of other things to ***** about for this game, but not this play.

No, it's not. Those return yards, any return yards, are house money. The clock stops afterward, so there is nothing to lose by returning the kick.

that's over coaching and being outcoached..why...simple you tell Austin, if you see them coming, just fair catch...else if you see an opening then just take it and we immediately call time out...instead he was told to just fair catch...they stayed back to block any punt block attempt and we could have countered by having most come back to block for Austin......instead three plays wasted to just get in position to throw a hail mary….instead of having three chances

It was a horrific call, but the image is a bit misleading. He already called fair catch a few seconds before this, so the defense quit running.

Thay is my thinking too. Once the kick happened, he signaled. You can tell thay not only the Vikings jogged but the Cowboys werent really blocking for a return either.

I want an explanation ...why was it so automatic? Austin had 15- 20 yards easy
There were 6 blue shirts to take care of 4 white shirts (and the two white shirts on the right were out of the play, considering Austin's speed). Can't tell what was beyond the 25 yd line, but there was a LOT of open space in front of him. That was simply a poor decision by the coach(es). Either Garrett told the ST coach to fair catch (more likely), or the ST coach did it on his own (less likely). Even if Garrett made the decision, the ST coach should have countered to have Garrett at least give Austin the choice of whether to return or fair catch the ball. Woulda, coulda, shoulda...

Yeah people need to see the actual video not a still image. It doesn't tell the whole story.

To me its the right call. If you had a timeout you run it and take your chance. But with no time left like that? You don't waste the time dancing.

I see 5 blockers for 2 tacklers.

Clown Team.
Look again... there were six blockers. But, as someone in a post above astutely pointed out, the Minny defenders may have slowed down due to the fair catch being called immediately.

Garrett has been a coach in this leaiue for nine years and is still making rookie mistakes like this. Garrett is Jerry's buddy, this is why you don't hire your buddies.

I don't mind not going for the block - the odds of getting a block are low, the odds of getting a roughing penalty are greatly increased, and there was a good chance a even if we had got the block it would have gone through the end zone, and a safety wouldn't have helped.

I understand Garrett's thinking, but his thinking was based on the preconceived belief that there wouldn't be much running room and we didn't have the time to give away trying to pick up a few yards on a return. In most cases that would have been right. But damn if there wasn't a lot of running room, and I hate that Austin didn't even have the option. With a block or two he might have even had a chance to go all the way down the sideline.
