The only explanation is that is what the coach told him to do.This is pretty misleading, Austin called for a fair catch almost immediately after the ball was kicked so the Vikings coverage was mostly jogging down the field.
On that long run by Cook. When DLaw chased him down along the sideline and Cook stumbled out of bounce.Which play did we have 10 players on the field?
Nearly as depressing as the Demarco Murray fumble in Green Bay with nothing but open grass in front of him
Typical Garrett move to force the fair catch AND not even attempt a block on the punt.
Exactly. I really wish someone in the organization would address this error and defend the decision. And you dont have to worry about getting out of bounds.

No, it's not. Those return yards, any return yards, are house money. The clock stops afterward, so there is nothing to lose by returning the kick.If this is the case, this thread is kinda moot. Plenty of other things to ***** about for this game, but not this play.

Thay is my thinking too. Once the kick happened, he signaled. You can tell thay not only the Vikings jogged but the Cowboys werent really blocking for a return either. It was a horrific call, but the image is a bit misleading. He already called fair catch a few seconds before this, so the defense quit running.
There were 6 blue shirts to take care of 4 white shirts (and the two white shirts on the right were out of the play, considering Austin's speed). Can't tell what was beyond the 25 yd line, but there was a LOT of open space in front of him. That was simply a poor decision by the coach(es). Either Garrett told the ST coach to fair catch (more likely), or the ST coach did it on his own (less likely). Even if Garrett made the decision, the ST coach should have countered to have Garrett at least give Austin the choice of whether to return or fair catch the ball. Woulda, coulda, shoulda...I want an explanation ...why was it so automatic? Austin had 15- 20 yards easy
Yeah people need to see the actual video not a still image. It doesn't tell the whole story. It was a horrific call, but the image is a bit misleading. He already called fair catch a few seconds before this, so the defense quit running.
Look again... there were six blockers. But, as someone in a post above astutely pointed out, the Minny defenders may have slowed down due to the fair catch being called immediately.I see 5 blockers for 2 tacklers.
Clown Team.
