I would get Dak signed even if I had to overpay. Then I would tag Coop and Byron. If someone wants to give up a first for either or both, I’m pulling the trigger and drafting their replacement.
You only get one franchise tag so pick one to use it on. The other tag that can be used in the last year of the current CBA is a transition tag but that only gives the team the right of first refusal if another team tries to romance that player away with money.

From what I understand you get two this year. If so, put the exclusive on Coop and the transition on Byron and see what happens. If someone offers you a first for them you pull the trigger and ship them off.

I like Cooper and Byron but if I can get a first for Byron I would go with it. I rather keep Cooper another year though.

If we got a first for Byron we could realistically get Kinlaw and Delpit/McKinney. Two biggest needs taken care of in the first round. That allows round 2-4 to grab a corner, DE, LB, TE or even receive if needed. Add a 1 Tech DT somewhere in there and we good to go

That is the most you could do but I'm of the opinion that Byron will get offers from other teams that easily exceed what the Cowboys FO is willing to pay him. It's a waste of a transition tag. Byron is as good as gone. But I do respect your willingness to go to those lengths to retain him.

You're right. There is no compensation for losing a player that has a transition tag. What a waste that tag truly is. Why was it even created? It's a joke.

Considering SJ already stated that Cooper was their second priority and Cooper reiterated that he wants to be in Dallas even if it takes time to get a contact done I think it's highly unlikely we take a first round pick for Cooper if we franchise him. But for BJ I'd take a first all day

It gives the team the right to match any offer. That's not always the case in free agency. Sometimes a player just wants to get away and will accept less somewhere else to make that happen.

I would get Dak signed even if I had to overpay. Then I would tag Coop and Byron. If someone wants to give up a first for either or both, I’m pulling the trigger and drafting their replacement.
Sign Cooper, he already cost the team a 1st. and Dak can not function without him.
Tag Dak (non exclusive) The team can't loose either way.
Transition Jones if they would like to keep him to see the market then decide to match or not.
If Jerry was a smart GM (everyone knows he is not) this is what would happen but Jerry being the sad egotistical GM he is will most likely destroy the team for his vanities sake thus the sad tale that is the Dallas Cowboys will continue.
(The tags can be designated between Feb. 25 and March 10. There are two types of franchise tags, exclusive and non-exclusive. A player with the non-exclusive franchise tag can negotiate with other teams. If an offer is received from outside, the current team has the option to match the offer or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation. The franchise tag is calculated by the average of the top five salaries at a given position or 120 percent of the player’s salary from last year (whichever number is greater).

To see the market value of a player you would like to keep but don't know what his value is, then decide to match or not. Now you know why the tag was created and why a team would use it. Jones is a prime candidate.

The transition tag doesn't carry compensation just the right to match. I would try to get a deal done with Dak and Cooper and franchise Jones. Then turn around and trade Jones for a 1st or early 2nd at worst. If the Cowboys thought Jones was the safer bet and liked other WRs available they could sign Jones then franchise-trade Cooper as well.

As concerned we all are to pay top 5 money to a QB that isn't quite top 5 yet, a high end WR that dissapears for stretches, or a CB that doesn't generate many Ints, a smart GM would recognize the talent he has, sign 2 even if it was for a couple million more than he intended to pay and franchise tag the other for draft capital.

Certainly easier said than done, but to let Jones walk away for a potential 3rd round compensatory pick seems foolish when you could get a lot more for him, especially if you planned to sign Dak and Cooper regardless.

Sign neither Cooper nor Jones
Only Dak

then use that money to actually build a team by signing

best DT in FA at 1T and 3T
best safety in FA
best TE in FA
vet back up QB
PR/KR

draft BPA, hopefully that is Kinlaw or a DE

pressure, pressure, pressure

I'm all for getting a first for either one of these players but would you take a first if it was the end if the first round like the 28th thru 32nd?

It's created to hopefully get a better deal on your own player. But it's rarely used. Dallas could use this tag on Dak for example. If Dak is already asking for top end money, what does Dallas have to lose? They'll either match top end money, or less. If no one offers him a contract knowing Dallas would probably match, Dak plays out the year under the tag for about 24 Mil.
