Mixed bag for defensive linemen
Okafor had some ups and downs at Tuesday's practice. He has nice double moves and he's able to turn quickness into power and drive offensive linemen back and get their pads high. Then there were times he was driven five yards off the ball. He always looks good against pedestrian competition, and worked Wisconsin RT Ricky Wagner during practice, but when Okafor is facing guys like Fisher and Syracuse OL Justin Pugh he's less effective. A lot of his college production came against marginal competition. We need to go back to see how he performed against certain tackles. He has a lot of positives, but he needs to be studied.

SMU DE Margus Hunt (6-8¼, 277) is just what you're looking for in a 5-technique (3-4 defensive end) in terms of size, potential and length. He's disruptive with his strength and long arms. Even when he's not making plays he can cause havoc, but you worry about the lack of suddenness in terms of his first step and change-of-direction ability. He lacked suddenness on Tuesday. He hasn't shown up a lot in the limited sample size we have so far, and we'll keep an eye on this raw prospect going forward to see what he can do.

North Carolina's Sylvester Williams was underwhelming in Tuesday's practice. Williams did well bending the edge and with his body control, and he has explosive qualities to be a good 3-technique in the NFL, but he was neutralized every time we watched him. There were times he flashed his quickness, but he was most effective with his swim moves and you can't consistently rely on those in the NFL, because offensive linemen will tenderize your ribs. He didn't make a lot of big plays on Tuesday.

We're most concerned with Purdue DT Kawann Short (6-3¼, 308). His upper-body power and short-area pop showed up in one-on-one drills, but he struggled during bag drills. Short was loose with his arms and didn't look like a guy who comes from a program that has produced numerous NFL defensive linemen.

Franklin leads RB group
UCLA's Johnathan Franklin (5-10, 201) was the best of the backs, mostly because he was good in pass protection. Franklin was stout and tough in one-on-ones, and put a good chip block on a defensive lineman during the team period. That period is designed to benefit the defensive players and Franklin was very good.

As a runner, he was patient, followed his blocks and showed good burst. Franklin's quickness also stood out, especially in individual drills.

Oregon RB Kenjon Barner (5-9⅛, 188) had a good Tuesday as well. He has a hard time in pass protection because of his lack of size, but Barner works hard. He needs work on his technique in pass pro.

Finally, Fresno State RB Robbie Rouse (5-5⅞, 186) had a hard time finding seams.

Glennon stands out in QB group

North Carolina State's Mike Glennon had a good day and showed the strong, easy throwing motion we expected to see. This venue is made for him because he can let it rip here. Glennon was accurate on Tuesday, and had good timing and good ball placement. His decisions were good during seven-on-seven drills, with Glennon taking what the defense gave him and making underneath throws when they were needed.

He also did well anticipating and throwing the ball deep into tight windows. He was consistent and took the step he needed to. It was a big improvement from yesterday, when Glennon was adjusting to new receivers.

Syracuse's Ryan Nassib took a step back, though. There is a huge difference between him and Glennon when it comes to driving the ball down the field. Nassib needs to go off his back foot to get into his throws. Glennon doesn't need to do that. Nassib's passes died when he looked downfield.

He did well in seven-on-seven drills, but he doesn't have that big-time arm. He also over-strides and was less accurate when throwing deep.

North notebook

• Rutgers OLB Khaseem Greene (6-0½, 236) had the best day of the linebackers. He jumped an underneath route he shouldn't have during seven-on-sevens, but otherwise showed great instincts. Greene was always around the ball on run plays, and it was clear he was reacting more quickly than the other linebackers on the field. He also had a nice fumble recovery and matched up one-on-one with Barner in coverage.

• Marshall's Aaron Dobson (6-2⅝, 203) and Oregon State's Markus Wheaton (5-11, 183) stood out in the wide receiver group.

• Michigan WR/QB Denard Robinson didn't get a lot of reps because of a lingering injury, but he did have a nice double move against Utah St. DB Will Davis.

• Connecticut CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson is 6-0½ and 192 pounds and has good range. He's physical as a press corner and can disrupt the routes of receivers. He ran with Dobson and recovered to break up the pass. You'd like to see better ball skills, though.

• Washington CB Desmond Trufant (5-11⅛ 190) had a nice day Tuesday. He has quickness, anticipation and route recognition. Trufant is a little tight when he needs to make a full 180-degree turn and struggled to stay with Dobson, but his ability to recover and short-area quickness are good.

He would be a good SLB for us. He'll probably be gone before we pick in the 3rd and I doubt we go LB in the first 2 rounds, though. But you never really know...after the first 20 picks or so, the draft is all up in the air. I'm sure he will be on our radar.
