What is this team's infatuation with 3 Tech vs 1 Tech? Why not draft a real 1 Tech. Why not have a guy who can physically collapse the pocket, not just penetrate?

What cant they be moved around (switched positions inside). Is there a specific reason not to flip them?

I don't think a 1 tech is actually suppose to penetrate or collapse the pocket. His main ob objective is to create an immovable wall so that the rest of the defense can work with half of the line. The other team will put two men their to try and move the wall so they are not a one dimensional team. Really don't understand why we are so against having that wall. There are players that can penetrate and collapse the pocket while actually moving the wall. Just don't see why we can't see the value in it. It frees up the 3 tech and everyone else.

I hope there is some way that Vea falls to 19

Marinelli has wanted guys that can get penetration for run defense, and pressure for pass defense.

"Real 1 Techs" who get both are a rare breed. Vea qualifies.

If he's available and we don't take him, it's hard to see us ever taking a 1tech high.

Marinelli made his bones as a D-line coach...where he was simply required to coach the players he was given.

Now that he’s a DC, I’m sure he has reasonable input into the type of DTs the team acquires.

Since Rod has made no secret that he prefers lighter, quicker DTs, are we really surprised that we’ve yet to see a 330+lb root-hog at the 1-tech position during RM’s tenure?

Collapsing the pocket is penetrating...you can't collapse the pocket without penetrating

I am not giving up my 2nd or 3rd rounder for a guy who had 99 tackles and 9.5 sacks in THREE YEARS (37 games).
Sacks and tackles are not what you judge a nose tackle by...

The NT is supposed to eat double and often triple teams so everyone else can either have a 1-on-1 or go unblocked in run or pass defense.

I don't mind them devaluing the 1 tech in this defense. I tend to disagree and would put more resources in the Defensive line. Although every team needs to have positions where they devalue and think they can fill without premium picks. My only question, is besides a strong half a season by McClain, have we even had average level play at the 1 tech? It is one thing to say you can fill that position with a bunch of guys, it is another thing to actually get plus level production from the guys you pick. I think they have come up short here.

Part of the role of the 1 tech is to push back the pocket so that while others on the D-line are penetrating, the QB doesn't have a big pocket to step up into.

I don't think we'll ever see an emphasis on a run-stuffing DT 1 as long as it's Roddy's scheme and defense. Marinelli's system is all about the gaps, holding andmaintaining it and getting push on the QB,collapsing the pocket and forcing RB's to the edge. The scheme is built around the Wil LB'er after that. Warren Sapp was a big part of the Tampa D-line when Rod was the assistant but Derrick Brooks was the linch pin. I read that SJ said as much in in the session yesterday. They aren't really interested in run-stuffing DT's and that's usually your DT 1 or nose. It seems that Vita Vea could be effective getting to the QB and stuffing the run. Can Payne get that push Rod wants? Don't know.

Because doesn't fit Rod's scheme, well breaking news Rod the scheme has not worked since the Buc's days and Rod, Warren Sapp and company are not walking thru AT&T Stadium doors anytime soon.
