With all the huge contracts we've made and now can't get out of, would it help if players only signed 1 year deals based off the season they just had? In these contracts now, in certain years the amount can increase or decrease. One that comes to mind us Dlaw, to pay him $20+ million based off his performance, to me it's not warranted.

That was just an example, in no way was I trying to bash Lawrence. This may be a bad idea in terms of athletes feeling the security contracts bring. To me, hey you earn it you get a good deal for the next year. We can't keep strapping our cap like this, please give me your thoughts

Yes and no. It could backfire on you having guys become free agents every year. Guys you want to keep suddenly have 6 offers.

If you're only offering one year contracts, you're going to have constant roster turnover. That's not a recipe for sustained success or continuity.

I like the idea of 1 to 2 year LARGE contacts. You can move on if you're not happy with performance.
Basically what the NBA has been doing the last few years - especially for veteran players past their prime - but still can make a significant contribution off the bench\ be part off a team's normal game rotation.
I believe it's a two-year deal, with the second year optional - which either the team or the player can exercise out of.
Also - that league has a myriad of contractual arrangements (a half-day seminar is needed for a fan to truly understand how it works for their team and roster IMO).

Sweet

Most players want long term deals except QB. They get that huge money and know the number goes up everytime or almost everytime a franchise QB is signed. Dak think he will cash in again. I wonder if he wishes he inked a 7 year deal now. Yeah he got 12 wins this year but how many feel good about the performance. The OC and O-Line hurt his stock.. If a good player gets a 20 million dollar 1 year deal with us or a 3 year 18 mil per year with guaranteed money from another team he may want the security..

it takes two to tango, players may not agree to one year contracts unless they are coming off injury, last year of their previous contract and aren't get much bites, so it becomes a prove me contract for them....by the same token then if they do play well that one year, they become much more expensive.

no denying we have handed out a few bad contracts, either too early (lawrence, zeke) or too late (Dak). that's on the GM...in case of lawrence, internal scouting should have been better as to what he really is and not thinking fantasy football

Why would any player take such a contract when they can just get the same if not more yearly value in multiple years as a free agent?

One year contracts are ok with players in unique positions such as coming off injury....but you can't have 10 or so players on one year contracts every year., probably means you are signing a lot of crap. maybe one or two do shine, but most won't. They are available at discounted rate for a reason. This year for example, we may only keep 2 or 3 at most. Rest will walk. No worries, Jerry and Junior will be sifting through the debris of others for replacements.

one to 2 year contracts should be the norm . Players will be motivated and on edge to win now . once they have 5 to 15 million dollar contracts and a lifetime worth of money , the motivation to go and perform hard disappears with most of the players. espcially the ones with Guaranteed conracts.
