Looking back over the last 10 drafts from 2008 thru 2017, I was curious to see what the averages by position are for 1st round picks, and see if the trends point to who might be available for the Cowboys at pick 19 this year:
Using the 10 year averages, here are you likely 32 picks in 2018.
QB - 3 (Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen)
RB - 2 (Saquon Barkley, Derrius Guice)
TE - 1 (Hayden Hurst)
OL- 6 (Quenton Nelson, Mike McGlinchey, Connor Williams, Isaiah Wynn, Will Hernandez, James Daniels)
WR - 4 (Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk, Courtland Sutton, D.J. Moore)
EDGE - 5 (Bradley Chubb, Marcus Davenport, Harold Landry, Sam Hubbard, Arden Key)
DT - 3 (Vita Vea, Da'Ron Payne, Taven Bryan)
LB - 2 (Tremaine Edmunds, Roquan Smith)
DB - 6 (Minkah Fitzpatrick, Derwin James, Denzel Ward, Josh Jackson, Mike Hughes, Isaiah Oliver)
If you just look at the top 16 picks, and the 10 year averages on those, then this is what the top 16 picks looks like:
QB - 2 (Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen)
RB - 1 (Saquon Barkley)
TE - 0
OL - 2 (Quenton Nelson, Mike McGlinchey)
WR - 2 (Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk)
EDGE - 3 (Bradley Chubb, Marcus Davenport, Harold Landry)
DT - 2 (Vita Vea, Da'Ron Payne)
LB - 1 (Roquan Smith)
DB - 3 (Minkah Fitzpatrick, Denzel Ward, Derwin James)
Since we all know that this year is unusual, and that a couple more QB's, namely Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield, will be picked in the top half of the draft, that leaves the following players for the Cowboys to choose from at pick 19:
RB - Derrius Guice
TE - Hayden Hurst
OL- Connor Williams, Isaiah Wynn, Will Hernandez, James Daniels
WR - Courtland Sutton, D.J. Moore
EDGE - Sam Hubbard, Arden Key
DT - Taven Bryan
LB - Tremaine Edmunds
DB - Josh Jackson, Mike Hughes, Isaiah Oliver
Of course, you may want to change some names around. Maybe guys like DT Maurice Hurst and LB Leighton Vander Esch push players like Arden Key or Hayden Hurst into the 2nd round. A lot of people think that 5 or even 6 QB's could be 1st round picks this year. There is always some variation from year to year. But based on historical averages, the NFL teams pick differently than the people putting together the big boards every season. We'll see what happens next week.
