10 SMALL SCHOOLERS TO WATCH AT THE COMBINE
http://www.jbscouting.com/index.php/blog/517-combine-watch
With the combine starting today it is time to look at 10 small schoolers worth paying attention to this week either in their workouts or with how they handle addressing the media and NFL teams.
1. OT Vladimir Ducasse, UMASS
Ducasse enters the combine as the top rated small school prospect on just about everyone’s board and has the pressure of putting up a good workout. He can only fall from where he is now thus making the pressure on him even bigger to maintain his current projection.
2. DE Austen Lane, Murray State
Lane is expected to produce freakish workout numbers in the on field drills such as the 40-yard dash, 3-cone, and others. While his bench reps are not expected to impress his speed drills should put him among the most athletic in the draft. If he puts up the numbers that many expect it should land him in the 2nd or 3rd round but if he fails to impress he could potentially fall to the 6th round.
3. CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, IUP
Coming off a shoulder injury, it is important for him to test out well in the medical exams and to show that he is 100 percent in the on field drills or there is a chance he could fall like a rock on draft day. If he runs in the 4.4 range in the 40-yard dash and passes medical tests then it is likely he comes off the board in the 3rd or 4th round.
4. OT Jared Veldheer, Hillsdale
Veldheer is an athletic freak with unreal size and speed (6’8, 315, 4.88) and has high expectations entering this week. With an athlete his size scouts will take a strong look at his ability to bend, the mirror drill, 3-cone, 10-yard, and bench press. If he can post good numbers it is likely he goes as high as the 3rd round.
5. QB Armanti Edwards, Appalachian State
Edwards enters the combine as one of the most talked about small school prospects in a long time and has drawn mixed reviews as to whether he will make it in the NFL or not. Our take is that there is somewhere for him at the next level but his medical exams will be looked at very closely because of his injury history in college. If he can pass those tests and run in the 4.4 or low 4.5 range coming off his MCL injury then he will definitely be drafted as high as the 3rd round and no later than the 6th round. If he fails to test out 100 percent in the medical tests then he could fall completely off the draft board.
6. DE Junior Galette, Stillman
Galette has shown great quickness off the edge, a good motor, and the ability to be a solid hybrid prospect in the NFL but has a lot of off field questions to answer. The vibe teams get from him in the interview room and how he handles the media could ultimately decide his draft day fate.
7. RB Joique Bell, Wayne State (MI)
Bell enters the combine estimated in the mid to high 4.5 range but could vault up draft boards. Durability and his shelf life are other questions that scouts will have this week as a four-year starter who has posted well over 1100 carries in his career and it is well known that the shelf life of running backs is not very long. Despite the questions his production speaks for itself and should get him drafted unless he fails medical tests or runs in the 4.6 range.
8. WR Chris Bell, Norfolk State
The questions that Bell will face could be as thorough as any prospect there due to his off field troubles at Penn State and his decision to declare early for the NFL Draft. Keep an eye on his workout results as we fully expect him to wow everyone with his numbers. If he does that and shows that he has truly changed during interviews it would not be surprising to see him land in the 4th-5th round range.
9. WR Chris Carter, UC Davis
Carter missed part of his senior year with an injury and still received an invite to the combine, showing how truly impressive of a player he is. Don’t be shocked if he lands in the 4th or 5th round as long as he checks out medically. His medical test results and whether his 40 time is around what scouts expect will have a huge impact on his ultimate draft day grade.
10. THREE-WAY TIE
Our final spot goes to three prospects who tie with why they should be on the list for different reasons. The first is Abilene Christian OT Tony Washington who has not been open about his off field past and has a major issue that would keep over half of the league from even drafting him. His senior season was also not the best in the world and thus scouts will likely hammer him very hard during interviews and keep a close eye on his workout results. Youngstown State WR Donald Jones struggled at the Senior Bowl and Texas vs. Nation Game and left El Paso injured. How he tests medically and his workout results will be heavily evaluated as he possesses mid round talent but has been nothing more than a free agent type prospect based on his postseason so far. Last at this spot is North Alabama WR Preston Parker who had the longest list of off field scuffles of any prospect on this list at Florida State but probably has as much talent as any of them as well. Keep an eye on his workout results as he will likely be drafted late if his combine workouts are impressive as someone could take a chance on this trouble but gifted athlete.
