1000 yard rushers?

Just wondering what your thoughts are regarding 1000 yd backs. It seems to me that the standard is outdated. 1000 yard rushers are fairly common in a 16 game schedule (there were 18 last year). I think the elite backs are those that reach at least 1300 yards. Yet everybody seems to still use 1000 as the benchmark. (then again most announcers these days refer to an end around as a reverse!!!!!! :banghead:..."sorry pet peave"

It is outdated, kind of. You need to average like 65 yards over 16 games compated to about 85 over 12 games to get to 1000. So, its a completely different criteria.

Of course, backs are getting hit by much much much bigger defenders these days so endurance is a much bigger issue. OJ or Jim Brown might have had a bit less success if every time they got tackled it came with an extra 30 or 40 lbs.

Some of that evens out.

How about 1150 yards? That is slightly above the average need to accomplish 1000 yards in a 14 game season.

1000 yards is nothing-one year, Warrick Dunn had 3 200+ yard games against poor tackling teams, and nil against the rest.

1300 is at a good barometer of the middle of the pack RB with a decent line... unless you are Barry Sanders

When did Dunn do that? I know he had 200 yards against Dallas in 2000 and I think that is his only 200 yard performance.

I think 1000 yards is still a good accomplishment. It would be nice to have a 1000 yard rusher in Dallas and one that did with over 4 yards per carry. I think you know you have a very good running game and very good running back when they average 85 yards a game and at least 4 yards a carry. That is 1360 yards for a season. They are great backs when they top over 1500 yards in a season and can do that 2 or 3 times in their career and include a few more 1000 yard seasons.

Dunn also had 200 yard games against the Rams(in that nail-biting Mon Nighter) and some other team that I can't remember. In all 3, it wasn't so much him, but the opposition had horrendous tackling.

No back will rush for 100 yards against EVERY single opponent. You're gonna face the D's like Pitt et al that are awfully difficult to run against.

Of course not, but they can average over a 100 yards a game. Get a couple of 160 yards games to counter the 50 yard games that you have in a season. Many backs have topped 1600 yards in a season. Emmitt did it twice.

I looked over Dunn's stats. They show only one 200 yard game in his career. I do understand the point you were making.

A 1000 yard back now indicates a back thats good enough to play for you incase you have nothing, an injury or something like that. When he comes in, its not a huge drop off and the chains will generally continue to move. A true elite back will have 1000 yards by thanksgiving week-end.

To be honest, I think the passing game has even further diminished the statistic. With the advent of the down field passing game and the mutiple set receiver packages, it's much easier to run the football now, IMO. Back when Jim Brown did it, that was something to be accomplished. Now, it's really not a huge statistic IMO. 1500 is an excellent season now but still not like 1000 back before time.
