105.3 The FAN: Should the Cowboys go with 3 QBs or 6 WRs?

I sold you on Milton being cut? I must be a bad salesman because that wasn't my point.
Doh. I misread what you wrote. So Milton is the one we can lose on practice squad? He played well too, but I've never seen him as a future QB. I'd rather take my chances with Howell.

And that is the negative of putting Howell on the practice squad. I don't know if he could be brought up for games and Milton be made the inactive (not sure it works that way). But I would be OK with Milton being the game-day backup and having Howell in reserve on the practice squad in case Milton tanks it.
Why would they have Howell on the practice squad if they would prefer him over Milton on game day?

Just to avoid putting Milton on the practice squad?

If that’s the case, then using a valuable spot on the 53 man roster on a guy that you wouldn’t even trust to play in case of an injury would be extremely unusual and I don’t think it’s ever happened.

More likely, they just keep all three on the 53 man and don’t dress one on game day

Outside of Covid when there was a situation where lots of guys were out, the last time a non qb played qb was over 25 years ago.

I thought that was only during the pandemic.
You can keep as many QBs as you want but for them to be eligible on game day they have to be a) on the 53 man roster and b) either on the 48 man gameday roster or designated as the emergency QB.

The Covid thing was the broncos when they had all four QBs out due to COVID protocols

Third string QBs do sometimes play but it’s because they have been on the active 48 man roster after the starter or backup was injured during the week.

2.5M cap hit to cut Howell.
The hit is there no matter if we cut or keep him. If we can get him to the practice squad, then he benefits from the guaranteed money and we benefit from him being on the PS. It's just a question of whether he'd agree to it. He doesn't have to worry about a pay cut if he does. Practice squad players make up to $400,000 per season but with his money guaranteed when he signed, I'd assume he has to get all $2.5 million, which is reason for him to agree to the PS spot. Of course, he might want to take the money and run to another team that would give him more money. But other than that, what does it matter if we pay him $2.5 million on the regular roster or on the PS?

Just to not risk Milton to waivers. Howell doesn't have to go to waivers, so the team could come to an agreement to have him on the PS, especially since it is paying him $2.5 million no matter what. However, I think if we kept Howell on the PS, we'd be OK with Milton as the game-day backup with Howell to turn to if he blows the opportunity.

I'd keep three QBs if both Howell and Milton keep looking good. I don't think Mingo is a legit NFL WR.
I really want the 4th round pick back.

We've made some really bad trades before, but this one takes the cake

Yes, we can lose Milton to waivers. We cannot lose Howell to waivers because as a veteran he can chose whether to go or stay.

Last year, the Cowboys kept veteran Will Grier on the practice squad for this same reason. They didn't want to risk Milton while Grier could agree to a handshake deal to stay on the PS. I prefer it that way if Howell would agree to do that. He doesn't have to; he can take the money and run if another team is willing to give him more to lure him away.

I just think that there wasn't much interest in Howell before we signed him so there's not going to be a lot unless a team loses its starter or top backup.

I understand.

As an fyi to the thread, the Cowboys never had three QBs on the 53 man roster last year during the regular season.

It was Dak and Milton for all 17 games

I would expect it to be the same this year. If Schottenheimer didn’t justify a third QB last year when we had forklift drivers on the roster, I don’t see him doing it this year with so much effort being put into turning over the roster.

This is just the Fan fanning. They needed a story for a Monday.
