The penalty problem continues but the team overcame them Sunday. Still have a long way to go.

It’s interesting - not all penalties are equally damaging. I divide penalties into two categories: Mental penalties and physical penalties:

Mental Penalties - the easiest to fix because it only requires mental focus. THIS is where coaches need to hold players accountable. Like false starts, lining up offsides, late hits, roughing the kicker. Those are a complete mental lapse.

Physical penalties are harder avoid like offensive and defensive holding, blocks in the back in STs.
The mental ones are the one that drive you crazy!!! These ST penalties that are mentioned can be physical ones, kind of like defensive holding and offensive holding. Players aren't stupid, you get BEAT and get beat bad, well you don't want to get your teammate killed or give up a LONG TD, so sometimes it has to be a physical one!!!!

In a tight game that could have been the difference.

Accountability and discipline is what is needed.

Players need to know if they keep screwing up they will pay for it.

We didn't "see" it because of the win we had and the amount of points we put up. We will see against a tougher opponent, then the roof will come off

Cowboys have had issues with penalties for a long time now. Even before McCarthy came here. Evidently, these penalties cannot be fixed as Coach Mike has said he was working on that...it's been 5 years now, and we still are having penalty issues!! Maybe it's because there is a lack of accountability. I have no idea.
It's been going on a lot longer than 5 years. In the 21st Century (24 years worth of research), the Lions and Cowboys get the most calls against, and the least calls for.

And, as the "conspiracy theorists" point out, these same numbers show far more favorable ref treatment towards the usual suspects of Green Bay and Pittsburgh.

Maybe Jerry hasn't made the league enough money to help with this issue, I guess he needs to try harder!! lol

It is a tiny bit off-topic but holding and blocks in the back on kick and punt returns always grinds my gears. The penalties are an issue on all levels of the sport and not just a Dallas Cowboys problem.

Coaches teach players not to grab on run backs. They tell players to avoid hitting opposing players when they are looking at the back of their jerseys. They practice this over-and-over from the time these professionals were small children but some still do it. Worse, some players keep doing it after causing flags two, three, four, five, <fill in the blank> times. I mean. The negative result of wiping out your teammate's return and losing field position never seems to penetrate the skull.

It is maddening.

My only thing with this and how it seems as that the person blocking for them completely misses the block to which it's I'm going to get the penalty instead of getting my teammate BLASTED! Some are just poor efforts, and bonehead mistakes to where the player didn't even need to do it, or didn't get square enough to block the opposing player legally

ABSOLUTELY
This is where accountability and discipline most comes into it. Brutally speaking you can cut ST players a lot more easily than starters. Bench them as well.
When they do something stupid as all too many of those penalties were, they need to pay one way or another
Offsides and lining up in the neutral zone are the others that really grind me; just plain laziness and carelessness.

there is no doubt of this; look at the favorable treatment the Pats and Tom Brady got so many times

nothing we can do about this sadly

Getting blasted and football go together like apple pie and 'Merica. Better field position and/or scoring is the goal of every punt and kick return.

Missing blocks can be excusable, albeit only to a certain point with coaches, lol. Avoidable penalties are inexcusable no matter the circumstance.

The issue predates Jerry. Cowboys have been getting hosed on major calls in major moments all throughout their history.

I've only looked at the hard numbers from 2000 on because it's easier to manage that than all of history. These stats are on various reference sites for anyone who wants to run the numbers themselves.

Practically all coaches deal with the problem. Most special teamers serve (besides punters and kickers) as rotational players or injury replacements in games.

There may be a large pool of special team types that can be a resource for cut players. However, it is not necessarily a huge repository of quality special teamers to plug-and-play. Coaches must consider the pros-and-cons of cutting players. Unfortunately, they are often pig-holed into retaining certain players they would otherwise part ways with.

Offsides and lining up in the neutral zone are the others that really grind me; just plain laziness and carelessness.
Agree 100%, especially guys lined up NEAREST the ball. What is their excuse? It cannot be they did not see where the freaking ball sits.

Would like to see a break down of the penalties. Who got them and which phase got the most.
