Referring to @bkight13 and his post "2016 Dallas Draft Picks" to plan out my selections. Thanks again for doing that. It's very useful info and better than just "winging" it.
I'll be making a trade down, and I completely understand "omg that will never happen" etc etc. Frankly, none of us know what will happen, so I'll just be having fun with this.
Please don't just focus on the trade(s) and let me know what you think as far as the players selected, needs filled, needs remaining, etc.
***Dallas trades the 4th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft to the St. Louis Rams for the 18th, 45th, and 48th picks***
(I don't know why St. Louis trades down. They desperately need a WR and some secondary help. Maybe Ramsey or Hargreaves fall. Maybe they view Laquon Treadwell as the next elite WR, like a Julio Jones or Dez Bryant.)
Draft pick values: Dallas sends 4th (1800pts) to St. Louis for 18, 45, 48 (1770pts). Quite close, and could ask for a 6th to bump up the value a little more but I'm happy with this regardless. We now have one 1, three 2s, one 3, two 4s, one 5, three 6s, zero 7s.
After the trade, our picks are as follows:
18) Carson Wentz | QB | North Dakota State | 6'6" 231lbs | This is the Cowboys plan for the future. They have Wentz graded as the 2nd best QB on the board and the 8th overall player. A steal at 18. I know right now he is graded as a 2nd round pick, but he is going to rise in the rankings after the Senior Bowl and Combine. His protoytpe body for the QB position is highlighted by his ability to run the ball. Can throw on the run very well, much like Romo. Can squeeze passes into tight windows. Shows good accuracy. Is known as a smart, hard-working guy with an ideal leadership personality. His main weaknesses are that he's only started 22 games, and that he really needs time to work on the mental aspect of the game. Luckily, he's got at least a year or two to learn from Romo, one of the best QBs in NFL history. Perfect situation.
34) Desmond King | CB | Iowa | 5'11" 200lbs | Has the right mental makeup for the position. Good size. Willing tackler. Fluid, loose hips. Good instincts and aggressiveness. Good ball skills. Lacks elite top-end speed. One of the best run-stopping CBs in college. I truly believe he could start Game 1 next year opposite Scandrick.
45) Joshua Perry | LB/DE | Ohio State | 6'4" 254lbs | Uber aggressive player. One of the leaders of the Ohio State defense. Teammates respect him and call him the "consummate teammate" due to his leadership qualities. Plays with a non-stop motor. Relentless hustle. Strong hands and uses them well to shed blocks. Led the team last year with 124 tackles. Underrated, hard working, mature "blue collar" worker.
48) Austin Johnson | DT | Penn State | 6'3" 325lbs | Big man. Tree trunks for legs. Very stout at the line of scrimmage. Can handle double teams without losing ground. Very good anchor. Good awareness and pursuit for a man his size. High effort, non-stop motor kind of guy. Need pass rush refinement (despite his 5.5 sacks this year). Piled up 13 tackles for a loss this year. Day 1 starter over Hayden with heaps of potential.
68) Tyler Matakevich | LB | Temple | 6'1" 232lbs | Very good LB prospect. At worst, he's great depth, but has a very high ceiling. Could develop into something special. I love the idea of him learning from Matt Eberflus. The leader of Temple's defense. Great quickness and anticipation. Takes good angles. Good blitzer from the LB position. Plays like a whirlwind. Absolute non-stop motor and relentless.
103) Bralon Addison | WR | Oregon | 5'10" 190lbs | Absolute speedster. Very compact build with amazing agility and acceleration. Will stretch the field. Very good hands. Seriously though, this guy is deceptively fast. The home-run threat this offense needs. Does not have a big body and is a bit undersized to play on the outside. Many teams will view him as a slot receiver only. Very reminiscent of Brandin Cooks, with similar size and playmaking ability.
135) Kevin Byard | S | Middle Tennessee | 5'11" 226lbs | Shorter than your prototype safety and does not have elite speed, so those two factors will limit his draftability. However, he has loose hips and very good change of direction. Turns into a WR when the ball goes in the air. Great awareness. Reads the QBs eyes. Great timing and hands to leap for the INT. Has had 15 interceptions in the last 3 years. Ball hawk that thinks he's a WR. Takes good angles.
