12 Confirmed Dead in Shooting at Paris HQ of Satirical Magazine

Police have confirmed that at least 12 people have been killed, 10 journalists and two police, in a shooting at the Parisian headquarters of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

A police union spokesman, Rocco Contento told French newspaper Libération that three men had entered the magazine’s offices at around 11.30am local time armed with Kalashnikovs and shotguns. “They opened fire on everyone, it was butchery, a real slaughter,” he said.

A source told French news channel France 2 that the magazine was holding their weekly editorial meeting when the attack took place with one Guardian reporter tweeting:

A manhunt is now underway to find the shooters with Le Point reporting that the anti-crime brigade are pursuing them 11th district of Paris.

AFP have reported that the attackers shouted “We have avenged the prophet”.

Reuters quoted a witness, Benoit Bringertold, as telling French TV channel iTele: "About a half an hour ago two black-hooded men entered the building with Kalashnikovs. A few minutes later we heard lots of shots." He added that the men were then seen fleeing the building.

Before even reading it, when I saw "satirical" in the headline, my assumption was that they probably dissed Islam in some way and some Muslim extremist thought killing a ton of people would make all right in the world.

Sadly, that is probably what happened.

What is bull is that American papers like the Washington Post and New York Times refuse to print the cartoons. People need to learn how to take a joke.

French Police took care of business this morning. There are now three fewer Jihadis in France.

So does this mean the media onslaught of ISIS coverage will return? Or will we still keep getting shoveled full of epidemic flu warnings? Perhaps Ebola will make a return to the media.

Seems we live in a pretty overly sensitive world.

Very tragic.

If someone was killed by a road rager, I'd want them prosecuted to the maximum extent of the law. If that victim had provoked it by giving the birdie, I'd still say it was poor judgement and abused their free speech. Likewise, I think Charlie Hebdo went beyond dissent to ridicule - something French officials thought was too far, like hate speech.

Flipping the bird is not abuse of free speech. Killing or beating someone up because they flipped the bird at you is abuse.

Aside from my prior statements I think it's unwise to use free speech to start a fight, Europe is fighting for their civilization.

Their population would be declining except for an influx of Muslim immigrants wanting to escape poverty, but ironically some want to destroy what made their new hope prosperous to begin with. o_O
