On that same day Peanuts creator Charles Schulz also passed away. Here is Mike Thompson's great cartoon about this.

I didn't realize it'd been so long already, I had that cartoon pinned on my wall for months afterwards

There is a reason I pushed my wife to name our kids Landry after each one was born. I lost that battle.

Wow, it does not seem like 12 years already. Seems like I was just watching the news of it the other day.

I'm a known Jerry Jones hater, I admit it. Part of that stems from the way he fired Landry. One of my best friend's dad was a huge Cowboys fan and he hasn't watched them since Jerry Jones came into the scene and basically took a big steamer on top of Coach Landry's head.

I obviously didn't take it that far, but I completely understand it.

The Cowboys owner your Dad's friend should hate is Bum Bright. Bum hated Tom Landry, and insisted that whomever bought the team had to fire him or the deal was off. Long before Jerry hired Jimmy Johnson, Tex Schramm was already thinking the same path had to happen. In fact, Ernie Stautner was demoted by Schramm on orders from Bum Bright and a DC was being brought in to run a 3-4 scheme. There was a similar firing, forced hiring on the Offensive side of the ball with Paul Hackett.

Was the father of a friend of mine, and I'm sure he took all that into account. All I know is he never rooted for the team again, think he even quit watching pro football, period. He felt pretty strongly about it.

Doesn't make a lick of sense to me. I couldn't stand Bum Bright, but I still pulled for the team, and make no mistake about it Bum Bright was the worst owner we have had by a country freaking mile.

Tom Landry was the best. A great coach and a true man. He is sorely missed.
