14 draft picks in 2009?

It's too far off to think much about the 2009 draft already, but it might be worth mentioning that if things break a certain way, we could end up with 14 picks next year -- a 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7 and 7.

That would be the extra third from Cleveland, the extra fourth from Detroit, a potential extra fourth from Tennessee (if Adam Jones doesn't play), a potential fifth-round comp pick for Jacques Reeves, the extra sixth from Miami, a potential sixth-round comp pick for Julius Jones and a potential seventh-round comp pick for Keith Davis.

Or, if Adam Jones gets reinstated and plays all season, we could have 12 picks (take away one fourth and one sixth).

So you think Keith Davis won't be worth a comp pick?

Sorry, I was going by memory and switched Nate Jones and Keith Davis. It's fixed now.

That's a lot of ammo to reload. Eagles with an extra 1st gives them a chance to make some moves as well.

If they finish last in the division again, they might need it -- especially since their recent drafts haven't been all that good.

They are in a complete rebuilding mode as far as I am concerned. But I also don't see the Panthers even making the playoffs with the losses that they have had.

The Eagles may have been producing the most pro bowlers through the draft, but they are just drafting backups right now.

Two recent 1st round DTs so they add a 2nd rounder? Granted, they use a rotation like us, but they skipped over talent to deal down for next year.

Jerry still added players at the top while adding value next year.

Let's hope that next year is a strong draft class.

Hey can ya do me a favor? As long as your praying for a strong draft class could you make it a tad more specific and pray for a strong WR draft class? (smile) No more excususes NEXT year for not drafting a couple young wide recievers please. I don't care if Glenn comes back this year OK and Stanbeck looks better. We NEED to start NOW drafting TO and Glenns replacements. It takes a couple years for most recievers to "get it" in the pro's. That clock needs to start ticking. And yes... (rolls eyes....) I will be thrilled if Miles Austin and Stanbeck show something this year. But we still need to start working on getting some other WR's ramping up also.

Next year on day 2: 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7 and 7.

Like I mentioned last night, Jerry will have to install more phone lines in the war room.

I have to think Jerry is going to use this to make a run at a veteran WR this summer. Maybe offer a player or two from our roster in the deal, but he loaded up for a reason.
There is no way 12 picks make our roster in 2009. Much less 14.

I figured we were setting it up so that we can move up next year a couple of times. We moved down a lot this year because we really didn't need much and shouldn't again next year. Use the picks to move up and select quality over quantity.

We have a pretty deep roster for the most part so I can't see more than a handful of new players making it this year.

I would like to see us go after a WR before the season starts, maybe someone after June 1.

I thought we might get more than a 6th for JJ although I'm not sure how the comp picks work.

with 12 picks...you draft about 7 quality players....use 2 for trades to get those players, and send 3 picks to the 2010 draft.....so that way we have more flexibility in 2010.

with 14 picks....you draft about 8 quality players....use 3 for trades to get those players, and send 3 picks to the 2010 draft.

Why use all 12 or 14 picks if there is no real necessity. Just keep pushing them forward to the next draft, allowing us flexibility within each draft, for the next several years.

Agreed. Please let it be this man:

For all the talk of needing a speed receiver, I think a reliable possession receiver is a greater need, since T.O. and Witten are our big play guys.

I'm always for trading up for a next year's pick. That is getting a free upgrade for patience, long-term thinking. The Pats have this concept down pat, and looks like Jerry has finally caught on the last couple years. I loved the trade of getting a 3rd and 4th in next years draft. Thanks Jerry!! Do this enough and those extra picks can theoretically be feeding another dual draft every year or an extra no. 1 every year, easily.
