So I am not a math wiz thank goodness for the I phone calculator to balance out my shortcomings but 17 games got me thinking 2 things .

1. How is it decided yr to yr who gets 8 Home games that season or 9 ? And does a division all get the same number that yr to keep a division race fair ?

2 . And yes I’m old enough to remember Phyllis George thank goodness and the 14 game NFL schedule . Which had too many preseason games but that’s another story . Injuries and back ups playing the backups in a game like football 14 was a good number .

Back to you in the studio Irv Cross .

Rotation. NFC East played @ AFC West this season. 1st place x 1st place and so on.

2022 NFC East vs AFC North
2021 NFC East @ AFC East

Reminder: this is just for the 17th game. The "interconference" rotation remais as usual.

But in 17 games an odd number you can’t have 8 1/2 home games . I guess one yr you get 9 the next you get 8 . Cowboys can’t seem to win a road game outside either NJ or playing the Chargers . That extra home game is nice .

18 games is what the owners want . I hope they drop pre season to 2 . 9 home and away would balance it out .

If the owners had their way the NFL would be playing 82 game seasons like the NBA and NHL. Jerry would be drooling like Homer Simpson at the thought of 41 home games and the amount of money he would make. Imagine how costly that would be for season ticket holders. Isn't is bad enough already? If you were paying about $300 a game your cost for a single season would be $12,300. Hell to the no....... especially when I know that money would be going to an owner who isn't invested in winning championships.

Yes, they alternate yearly by conference.

Last year NFC teams had nine home games. AFC has nine this year.

Don't worry to much about it, soon to be an 18 game season which is what the owners really want and everything will even out......
Don't forget Germany now added and in short time I expect Japan, Alaska, Antarctica, South Korera and Beijing....and porr me here in the Toronto area won't get a sniff

In 1972 Dallas played 21 games and 7 were preseason, and lost the best qb in the game for the year. It was my first full year as a fan and I am still bitter :)
As the champs they also had to play the College All Star Game, which I think ended just a few years later.

In the NFL, the scheduling of home and away games is determined by a rotation system that is designed to be fair and balanced. The league follows a scheduling formula that ensures each team has an equal number of home and away games over a certain period of time, typically a three-year cycle. Here's a general overview of how the NFL scheduling process works:
  1. Divisional Games (6 games): Each team plays the other three teams in its own division twice, once at home and once on the road. This accounts for six games.
  2. Intraconference Games (4 games): Each team plays four teams from another division within its own conference. These games rotate each year, with two games at home and two on the road.
  3. Interconference Games (4 games): Each team plays four teams from a division in the opposite conference. Like intraconference games, these matchups rotate each year, with two games at home and two on the road.
  4. Remaining 2 Games: These games are against the teams in the remaining two divisions within the conference that finished in the same place within their respective divisions (e.g., first-place teams play each other, second-place teams play each other, and so on). The location of these games alternates each year.
To summarize, a team plays six divisional games (three home, three away), four intraconference games against another division in the same conference (two home, two away), four interconference games against a division in the opposite conference (two home, two away), and two additional games against teams in the same conference but different divisions (alternating home and away).

This scheduling system helps maintain a level playing field by ensuring that each team has a relatively equal distribution of home and away games over time. The specific matchups and sequence of games may vary from year to year, but the overall structure is designed to be fair and balanced.

I think the lightning storm a few years later put an end to that gimmicky mess.

Didn’t they also used to play some sort of a consolation game between playoff losers around then?

The Playoff Bowl ran from the 1960 to 1969 season, yes. It was between the 2 second place teams from 1960-66. From 1967-69 it was the losers from the playoff semifinal games. The Cowboys played in 3 of them, winning the 1968 game over Minnesota. A fun fact is the Detroit Lions once 3-peated as Playoff Bowl champs.
