...a remarkable gentleman named Texas Earnest Schramm retired as the General Manager of the Dallas Cowboys. In my opinion, no one did more for the overall game of football and how it is shaped today as America's favorite sport, than Tex Schramm. A powerful member of the rules committee he was always looking for ways to improve the game. Some things he came up with almost go unnoticed.

Take for instance the arrows pointing towards the closest goal line at the 40, 30, 20, and 10 yard marks. That was an idea Tex came up with when he watched a runner go past the 40 yard line marker and wonder whether it was our 40 or theirs.

Or the flags held by the Officials on the sideline that measure 1st down. He also noted that they should be different so you knew whether the player passed the Line of Scrimmage or the 1st down. He also advocated the red marker on the ground that they use.

Some of you are too young to remember but the goal posts used to be on the goal line. It was Tex who pushed to have them moved to the end line and then to be moved even further back and the pole to be curved. Ever notice the flags atop the goal posts to measure the wind direction? Tex came up with that.

How about the yard wide white area on the sidelines? Tex.

The merger with the AFL is one of the biggest moments in league History. Tex negotiated that merger, not the NFL Commissioner. That is how powerful he was.

White uniforms at home was Tex. he thought it made the game more interesting to not see the same 2 colors every week. In other words for the teams that wear dark colors at home. They see those same dark colors and white every single game. Tex cared about what you saw.

You like the cheerleaders? Like I said, Tex cared about what you saw.

You like Tom Landry? Tex hired him away from the Giants.

You a fan of the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis? Tex.

Oh and let's not forget that along with Landry he is the architect of America's Team.

IMNSHO, he is the greatest General Manager of all time.

I agree Tex was the best and he was a hell of a promoter which helped the Cowboys stay in the spotlight. He was smart enough to know that the Thanksgiving Day game would be a great marketing move for the Cowboys. When other owners passed on it Tex took it with the one condition that Dallas would always have the game

Great post Hos! We could probably go on for another 3 pages with stuff that Tex brought into the game and still not get it all. He is the one who built the Cowboys into the most successful franchise of the modern era, in any sport.

Here's to you Tex...

4/18/89...Tex Schramm retires as Cowboys General Manager.

SchrammDal.jpg

Some of us older Cowboy fans will never forget this day.

I still remember where I was when I first heard the news. Sitting on my couch watching SportsCenter like it was just any other day. It wasn't a total shock at the time, but you just knew things wouldn't ever been the same after we were sold.

Our team was in turnoil at the time and the fan base had a uneasy feeling about the direction we were heading. Lucky for us Jerry Jones hired his old college buddy Jimmy Johnson to replace Tom Landry and we would return to glory.

But on this day in 1989, it was the end of an era.

I was stationed overseas at the time very rarely got any news like this. A sad day for the franchise.

Tex was the man for sure.

The thing about the jersey colors at home was also about the heat issue in Texas. He thought the darker colors made it hotter for the opposing teams. I like the way he thought. The NFL lost a brilliant mind when he left.

Just a great post Hos. I would, however, make on slight addition. True that Coach Landry did come from the Giants but interestingly enough, Bud Adams of the then Oilers thought he had Coach Landry inked to a deal as the Coach of his team in Houston. Very last minute, Tex came in under the wire and offered a slightly better deal. That, in part, is why Adams hates the Cowboys so much. I didn't know that tell very recently. Funny how these things work.

Great post Hos.

Let's add some shall we?

It was Tex Schramm who introduced the idea of Divisions to the NFL.

He also came up the Wildcard playoff format.

He led the push for Instant Replay.

Mulit colored stripes at the 50 and 20 yard lines.

30 second play clock.

Microphones for the referee so fans and announcers could hear the penalties and discuss them.

Built the first ever modern scouting system and revolutionized the use of Computers to compile data.

Came up with the sudden death overtime rules.

Developed the Ring of Honor which he joined post humously. Unfortunately.

There are others.

Tex Schramm was vain, arrogant and vindictive.

He was also brilliant, loyal and dedicated.

Most of all, he was the architect of America's Team and the brains behind Pete Rozelle's successful tenure as commissioner of the NFL.

The Dallas Cowboys and their fans were lucky to have him.

Jerry Jones waited too late to honor Tex.

Tex was great. Say what you will but he loved the game of football and the Cowboys.

He is in the Hall of Fame right? I am pretty sure he is.

I was pretty sure. But with the bias against cowboys was not 100 percent positive.

Thank you!

Just looked him up on Wikki and found this:

"He was the first person ever to be inducted that was not an NFL "player, coach or owner."

To be inducted into the ROH more than 12 years after Tex was inducted into the HOF is just a shame. Unfortunately, Jerry dropped the ball on this one.

Much obliged, Hostile. Thanks for stirring such great memories of our storied franchise w/ your historical rememberances.

I was so enraged at Jerry Jones for his ruthless dismantling of the organization, I actually became a 49ers fan and cheered for any team playing the Cowboys.

Watching Tom Landry inducted into the ROH softened me quite a bit though, and I found my way back into the fold. I figured if TWL could "turn the other cheek" so could I.

I Jerry does the right thing w/ the new stadium, and finds a way to properly honor the guys that made this team worth a great investment, I'll be glad I did...
