1979 Week 16 Wash vs Dal Landry's Offensive Analysis

Week 16 and this was for the NFC East championship. Landry was a defensive player in the pros and created the FLEX defense. So one would think his strong suit would be defense. And yet....he also was the architect of the offense. This is a breakdown of that game and the Dallas offense. This is X's and O's and offers superb insight into the game inside of the game.

Little history here. Coming out for the second half the Washingtonians truly dominated. The lynchpin for their lead was a 63 yard run by John Riggins. They called a counter trey and Riggo got outside and ran the sidelines for the score. The entire offense met in the endzone because they felt they had just won the game. They celebrated like it was a done deal.

However, when the Washington's had the ball for the last time as the clock ticked down, they tried to seal the deal by running the counter trey again. A first down and the game would be over. Larry Cole burst through the line behind the pulling guard and tackled Riggins for a loss, which set up the Genius head coach and Captain America to do what they do.

I don't know who this guy is doing the analysis, but he is next level. The video is somewhat blurry in spots. But the transcript tells the story of one of the best games in Dallas Cowboy history.

Landry was an innovator on both sides of the ball. He popularized the use of the shotgun and motion on offense. I think the word genius is overused at times, but I think Landry was a true football genius.

Even though this was a great game. Still remember watching it with my fellow Cowboys friend, loving every minute of it. The playoffs leave a black mark. No way should the Rams have beaten us. It should have been a rematch in the SB. The Rams were not better than us. But they were on that day.

Roger brought us back from 2 different double digit deficits in that game with an injured Drew Pearson to boot. John Riggins had a monster day against us and when they went up 34-21 on us in the 4th quarter, I gave us little to no shot of coming back. It was vintage Staubach.
It would’ve been such a great memory if they hadn’t lost the opening round playoff game against the Rams the following week. I hate Billy Waddy to this day.

I loved that game but that team would have been roasted by this board and there would have been a call for Landry's head the next week when they lost at home in the playoffs to the LA Rams who were not a great team with Vince Ferragamo. This board would have called for Staubach to be traded (he retired) and Landry to be fired.

what got me was how our great D could not stop Riggins and the skins Offense
there is no way we should have given up 34 points to them
