Allot of would have and could have in the game. Had Doug Donley held on to the White pass on 3rd down we would have had the 1st in SF territory with a chance to add to the lead instead we punt and SF drives the field.

Hank Stram blamed Danny (who had to throw with two rushers bearing down on him), but it sure looked like it was catchable.

True because it was a classic game. There are many post season game we forget about but great games you don't. Another example of that was the (Epic in Miami) 81 divisional playsoffs Maimi/SD game both QB throwing for over 400 yards in the game. With an exhausted Winslow being helped off the field by teammates

As I stated earlier being a part of some of the greatest game in the NFL and is a big reason for the success of the NFL is something I do take pride knowing the Dallas Cowboys have been a big part of that.

I agree. It was a bit behind but it was catchable and it was critical. We would expect guys like Drew Pearson or Dupree to make it, in this case it was Donley and he just could not hang on

I guess I meant it's strange to re-play one game over and over in your mind for decades considering we've experienced so much success as a franchise. Conversely, I can see why Vikes' fans obsess over "Hail Mary" or the Bills' fans over the "Music City Bowl" because they never (ultimately) got to the mountain top.

Very true, you could taste the victory and to watch it slip away is tough and stays in your mind. Even though Dallas had 3 SB titles since then that game will linger.

It's been almost 30 years and I still can't bring myself to watch that game again.

I cringe everytime the show the damn "catch" and dive to grab my remote and change the channel as fast as I can to avoid having to see it again.

the interesting thing to me is, that white fumble never actually appeared to be a fumble...It was either his arm going forward or the tuck rule. Jerry marchriet(spelling sorry) didnt even discuss it.

In todays nfl that is overturned and its second down and we are 20 yards with plenty of time from field goal range...

when you look at all the new rules in the game and how it has evolved if most of the classic games, the games that made the nfl great were played today they would be entirely differnet because of so many close calls that today would be ruled differently.

that is why I hate the overtime stuff. Just leave the game alone.

I have no problem watching it because we were competitive for 60 minutes. Had we been blown out, that'd be different.

The Cowboys have been the "victims" of a number of dynasty teams..

In the late 60's, the Packers spoiled our fun.
In the 70's, it was the Steelers.
In the 80's, it was the 49ers.

We took over the 90's.

But in those other three decades, the Cowboys had the misfortune of going up against three of the all time great teams...each of which established themselves against us in less than dominating fashion...both games vs the Packers were down to the wire...The Super Bowls vs the Steelers were classic games...and of course, this game vs the 49ers was right down to the wire as well.

IMO a win in that game and we beat the Bungles in the Super Bowl. All our close losses that cost us another Super Bowl win seem to mean more to me since the Stealers recently won their 6th championship.

I think we beat the Bengals, but it's not a slam dunk. Even the Niners struggled in that game. We sure as hell would have destroyed the Chargers in '94.

The fact the game was competitive for 60 minutes makes it even harder for me to watch because the Cowboys could have won had it not been for a couple of plays. It's always alot harder for me to deal with a close loss than a blowout. Blowouts leave you no chance of winning or a what could have been in the back of your mind. Blowouts are never replayed over and over again through the years unless they took place in a super bowl.

For sheer entertainment purposes, I'll take 28-27 over 44-6.

When you end up on the short end nether one is very entertaining. As bad as the 44-6 defeat was 2 years ago I doubt that game will ever come close to haunting Cowboy fans like the 28-27 loss 29 years ago to SF. I can assure you that 44-6 defeat to Philly will be a distant memory 29 years from now. I'm not even fazed by that loss anymore.

Re watching if I forgot that on the 90 yard drive SF had to put up the winning TD was Dallas stayed in dime coverage with 7 DB throught out and how much SF ran the ball on that drive getting down to the redzone to put up the winning TD pass to Clark. Had Dallas went more to their base defense on that drive SF who had a hard time running the ball that day may not have been able to put together the 90 yard drive. Allot of would have and could have in the game. Also hard to think SF turned the ball over 6 times in that game with 3 big Montana ints and a fumble by Montana forced by Martin

The Cowboys were thinking pass and the 49ers crossed them up by running the ball.

The premise is "if you had to watch either game." I doubt very many would opt for the Philly debacle.

I'm just talking from a Cowboy fans perspective. I don't enjoy reliving the pain of any Cowboys loss.

When White fumbled at the end I vividly remember smashing my friend's Rubik's Cube on his parents' hardwood kitchen floor. The cube detonated into tiny pieces and a good quarter inch divot was left in their floor. Part of me died that day at age 10. I can't bring myself to watch it again.

I really feel you Ikelly...except the smashing of the Rubik's Cube on a friend's hardwood floor. LOL!

As great as I felt when we exacted revenge in the '92 NFC title game, I'm still (somewhat) haunted by "The Catch" game. You had to have watched the game in person, especially with the way that SF demolished us earlier in the '81 season--scoring 24 points in the FIRST QTR. alone, and then to go and win 45-14--and given our desire for revenge, it was absolutely devastating. From that point on, SF had a psychological edge on us for the next 12 years, one that was not erased until the '92 title game.

But the '81 game is definitely one that lives in infamy for me...and a LOT of Cowboys fans.
