1st Down, Hurd goes out of bounds, why clock not stop?

Why did the clock keep running on that play where Hurd caught that 1st down pass at sideline and stepped out with under 1 minute left? I think we had to call a time out. Or am I remembering that incorrectly.

Seriously, I never saw his knee go down and "running backwards".

Honestly, perhaps I don't understand the rule.

if you are tackled and land in bounds, and roll out of bounds, the clock still runs

for the clock to stop, you have to be forced out of bounds, or run out of bounds, you can't get tackled and roll out of bounds to stop the clock

Ok thanks. Appreciate the info. To me it didn't look like he got tackled, but he did have his forward progress stopped , and I think this was a bit lazy work on Hurds part, as was not going out of bound by Austin on a short pass prior to end of 1st half. Need to look at both the plays again.

To me.that rule has either changed or mutated into the call that is made today.Watching football as a kid,it was always if you made it to the sideline the clock would stop.I believe they should amend that rule so that the defender has to tackle you in bounds(it promotes more offense and better 2 minute drills which you would think would appease their offense first mentality)to keep the clock moving...

It was an awful call by the refs, Hurd ran out on his own accord and they ruled that he was pushed out moving backwards so he didnt get out of bounds. Total BS!

His forward momentum was stopped, it's called that way in every football game.

If you go out of bounds while moving backwards, the clock keeps running. If you go out of bounds while going forward, the clock stops. Stupid rule, but refs are consistent with it so we can't complain.

Correct. His momentum was stopped then he was tackled backwards out of bounds. They gave us the yard and a half Hurd lost, but kept the clock running.

You're right. It's only in the last few years that the refs have been so quick to call that forward progress and keep the clock rolling.

Only he ran out of bounds his momentum wasnt stopped by the defense. You should be able to run backwards on your own to get out of bounds. The rule needs to be changed.

Hurd wasn't tackled. Bailey pushed him backward and out of bounds. The ref correctly gave Hurd forward progress, which means the play was dead while he was in bounds, so the clock kept running.

Forward progress is the key. If the ref awards forward progress, the clock keeps running.
