The last day to decline or activate the 5th year option on 1st rounders from the 2015 draft was yesterday. There were 8 players whose options werent picked up, three of which are on the Patriots: Danny Shelton(drafted by Browns and traded with a 2018 5th rounder to Pats for a 2019 3rd rounder), Malcom Brown, and Phillip Dorsett(traded to Pats for Jacoby Brissett)

It seems the Pats are targeting 1st rounders who havent lived up to their draft billing, declining their option and letting them play out the last year of their deal with the intention of either resigning for cheaper than the option or letting them walk for a comp pick.

My question is, are there any 1st rounderd from the 2016 draft you'd like to target that havent lived up to their billing yet?

Some options include:
Eli Apple
Vernon Hargreaves
Corey Coleman
Shaq Lawson
Darron Lee
Josh Doctson
Laquon Treadwell
Artie Burns
Paxton Lynch
Robert Nkemdiche
Vernon Butler
Germain Ifedi

On a side note, it's crazy we drafted so well aftee looking back at the draft as a whole. This was a weak draft.

Looking over the list I am OK with Dallas kicking the tires on any of the players on the list. Artie Burns was my pet cat the year he came out (thought he was a late 2nd or 3rd). Many forum poster thought Treadwell was the second coming of Jerry Rice. I did not like Eli coming out and thought he was a late 2nd rounder at best, I am not opposed to a look. Just don't overpay.

On one catch though, Cap friendly on these re-treads. Dallas is in a great position for 2019 with cap space. I want the team to build the O-line and D-line into the best in the NFL. Winning the trenches is what will get this team to the Superbowl

Honestly, that's not a very impressive list so for me the answer is mostly no. I think Eli Apple has some potential but corner is not a spot we necessarily need any more developmental players at.

The guy that piqued my interest because I watch a lot of SEC ball was Treadwell. Coming back from one of the nastiest injuries I've ever seen the guy could flat out play.

And as we've seen before, sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery and some confidence from a new coaching staff for a player to blossom. I'd take a flier on several of those guys, we brought in Austin and he's exactly what you're describing.

This is where I would burn my 7th round pick every year.......put is up for sale. Any team willing to trade their former first-round player with declining option, call me. For a 7th it's well worth the gamble IMO.

Personally my favorites for the Boys(different than my favorite targets of the group) are Lawson, Treadwell, and Lee.

Notice the compensation given by the Pats.

A 7th won't get it done. We'll have to give much more considering the comp pick policy.

What on earth happened to TReadwell....and with Thielen and Diggs doing what they are doing.....he's never going to have a career in Minnie. I'd take a shot on all those guys. Corey Coleman for SURE.

Lot of flops

Phillip Dorsett - WR - Patriots
Patriots declined WR Phillip Dorsett's 2019 team option.

Dorsett isn't higher than the No. 4 receiver on New England's crowded depth chart. He needs a strong training camp to avoid getting cut. The Patriots also declined fifth-year options on Malcolm Brown and Danny Shelton.

Breshad Perriman - WR - Ravens
Ravens declined WR Breshad Perriman's 2019 team option.

Perriman has been a non-factor since missing his entie rookie year to injury. With Baltimore adding Michael Crabtree, John Brown and Willie Snead this offseason, he's entering a make-or-break training camp.

Stephone Anthony - LB - Dolphins
Dolphins declined LB Stephone Anthony's 2019 team option.

This was never going to get picked up. Anthony appeared in eight games with Miami after coming over from the Saints last season. He should compete with third-round LB Jerome Baker for the strongside job opposite Kiko Alonso.

May 2 - 4:50 PM
Malcom Brown - DL - Patriots
Patriots declined DT Malcolm Brown's 2019 team option.

Brown was one of the better tackles in the league last season. He's also missed just three games to injury, so there wasn't much downside in picking up his option. The Patriots may try to extend Brown for lower than the $7 million he would have made in 2019.

Laken Tomlinson - G - 49ers
49ers declined OG Laken Tomlinson's 2019 team option.

The 49ers had no plans to pick up Tomlinson's option, which would have paid him $9.3 million. He'll return at left guard after starting 15 games last year. Tomlinson could be extended at some point during the season.

Ereck Flowers - T - Giants
Giants declined OT Ereck Flowers' 2019 team option.

This was fully expected. The Giants shopped Flowers during the draft, but didn't find any takers. With his $2.4 million salary fully guaranteed, there aren't any plans to cut Flowers despite his shaky 2017. Flowers will compete for the right tackle job opposite Nate Solder in training camp.

Danny Shelton - DL - Patriots
Patriots declined DT Danny Shelton's 2019 option.

New England traded a third-round pick for Shelton in March. He's coming off a solid 2017, but the Patriots don't view him as worth a $7 million salary. Shelton will play out the final year of his rookie deal and become a free agent this offseason.

Dante Fowler - DL - Jaguars
Jaguars declined DE Dante Fowler's 2019 team option.

Fowler is coming off arguably his best season to date, one in which he recorded eight sacks on just under 500 snaps as a reserve behind Yannick Ngakoue and Calais Campbell. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 draft, Fowler's option would have paid him over $14 million. That number was deemed too high for a guy with one year of production and some off-field concerns.

What do target mean?

Just to be clear, those players (unless cut) are under contract for two more seasons even if the 5th year option is declined.

Trade for, like the Pats did with both Shelton and Dorsett.

Give up 5th for Shelton, Malcolm Brown or Nkemdiche. I like Fowler but is just too expensive.

Two guys I would want next year in the right scenario are Dante Fowler and Kevin White.

Fowler missed his first year due to injury and has had some issues off the field. If Gregory doesn't make it back and Armstrong isn't legit, Fowler could be that quick edge guy we need to play opposite Lawrence.

Kevin White was a BEAST at West Virginia but cannot stay healthy for the Bears. Would have to be a prove-it deal, but his ceiling is extremely high.

What the heck happened to him? He was red hot coming out and everyone knew he was going to tear the league up.

Vikings unexpectedly had two legit WR1s merge out of nowhere, Diggs a 4th rounder and Thielen an UDFA. It's limited Treadwells snaps along with his rookie year injury.

Doctson started to make plays towards the end of last year.

I think,

Eli Apple
Vernon Hargreaves
Josh Doctson

have good chance to be saved and turn careers around. I think the right team / Staff would be needed .
