For our 27th pick is approximately $924K for 2015 (goes up only about $40K a year). For 4 years (with a 5th year team option). I like Demarco as much as the next guy, but I see no reason to pay him $3-4M a year (or more) when we can get Melvin Gordon or Todd Gurley for 5 years at approximately $1M per. Throw the $3M or more you save at a top pass rusher (we wont find an instant starter at 27). This is how you manage a salary cap. Not paying for past performance.

Thing is if we don't upgrade our dline in free agency or rb in free agency I won't be happy taking rb that early. If we upgrade dline in free agency I'll be all for it but until I see some moves in fa. I'll hold judgement

Murray's price tag would be even higher than 3-4/yr, I'm guessing.

And yes, that is a good argument for not keeping him. The other is the drop off a cliff at 30 thing.

The argument against giving him up is Trent Richardson :) In other words, RBs don't come with guarantees.
It is a deep RB class though. I'd actually prefer to grab a RB sometime in Rds 2-4

If they dont upgrade DL in FA....Do you see a SDE who they can draft that will be an impact in RD1?

I really dont see a guaranteed starter falling to 27. I think Fowler, Gregory, Ray, Dupree are gone. Perhaps Harold and Orchard are there, but they are DE/OLB tweeners at 250lbs. The only guy available that could fit the mold is Odighizuwa from UCLA who is about 270 and can run. But I would much rather sign a free agent like Greg Hardy or Jabaal Sheard with the money we save on not signing Demarco. They are proven pass rushers, which in my mind are much harder to find & project than rookie RBs.

Isn't the 5th year for 1st rd players an option they have to pick up with a pretty significant pay boost involved?

For me, the answer is a No. I don't think OO is worth it at 27 and neither id Orchard. Harolds small and I think a 3-4 team picks him before 27 anyways

I think the pick will be RB at 27 from whoever is there between Gurley or Gordon. If not i can see them trying to trade back. If not i think they will draft OL. There should be 2 or 3 of the OT there. Which might entice a team like the Bucs to trade up and get a OT to protect Winston

While I agree in principle with your post, throwing money at a top pass rusher isn't paying for past performance?

Yes, it is the team option and a salary increase. For players selected 11-32 in the first round, the salary increase is the average of the top 3 through 25 at the position. So essentially, average starting RB money in that 5th year. Probably not much more than $1-2 million. Here's an explanation...

You'd rather take a rb that early when this draft is loaded w front 7 guys. So yes I think we can acquire a guy at 27 who can make an impact on our line

Yes Gurley and Gordon are better then anybody that will be available to Dallas at 27 in DL. Name the person ast 27 on the DL that would start? Dont name a 1tech because thats not happening in round 1.

The downside is that RBs cost less than several other positions like pass rusher, CB, LT etc..

Ideally you would like to use your 1st round picks on the expensive positions and fill the less expensive positions in free agency.

You are basically using your draft pick to buy a player for 4 years.

If starting RBs average 5M per year and starting pass rushers average 10M per year then ideally would you like to use your draft pick to buy the 10M per year replacement.

Obviously the trade off is that there is a risk that the pass rusher at #27 might have a lower probability of becoming a quality starter than the RB at #27 would.

Very good points. I have no problem with an RB in 2nd or 3rd, if Gordon or Gurley is not available or not their target.

I see us going defense in round 1....DL, CB, or LB.

I see RB in rounds 2-3.

I hope all of these replacement runners are good at pass protection and able topick up blitzes as well as Murray.... Otherwise Romo will be on IR about game 6.

I'm betting RB goes higher then most expect this year, like OL a couple of years ago. Seattle, Patriots, Cowboys, Colts , Chargers could all use a RB. This years RB class is good, and people don't want to pay big dollars.

FA is going to be telling this year I believe but if Gurley is there, he needs to be the pick.
