Ellis McCarthy
STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
STRENGTHS: Look the part. Sports a prototypical
defensive tackle build with broad shoulders and a thick lower half that make him tough to move. He shows position (and scheme) versatility, lining up inside and out. Possesses the core strength to anchor against double-teams and has long, strong arms to latch on and drag ballcarriers to the ground. When healthy and in shape, McCarthy can stun opponents with his initial quickness and agility and uses an effective bull-rush to push blockers deep into the pocket.
WEAKNESSES: Offers little as a pass-rusher. Heavy-footed and needs a clear lane to penetrate and affect the quarterback. Battled weight issues over his career and seemed to tire quickly (despite being regularly substituted). Possesses just average initial get-off and lacks refined pass rush technique, relying on a simple bull-rush most of the time. Occasionally used on stunts, showing limited balance, speed and flexibility to offer much in this regard. Has undergone surgery on both knees over his career.
