Two more Cowboys were among the final four Seniors Committee considerations for the 2008 Pro Football Hall of Fame induction. Wide receiver Bob Hayes and linebacker Chuck Howley were included in the final four

I would like them both to make it but I think its a huge injustice that Chuck Howley has been left out all this time, i really hope he gets the nod

I hope both of them make it, they certainly deserve to be in the HOF.

Doubt that the HOF will induct 2 senior Cowboys into the HOF in the same year. Since Renfro made it as a senior candidate last year, it even possible neither of Cowboy makes it in this year. However, if the writers ignore our getting a Cowboy in last year, then I think WR Hayes makes this year along with Tommy Nobis. If Robinson makes it in, the odds increase that Howley will get in over Nobis.

Tommy Nobis will be hard to keep out but I'll keep my fingers crossed that both Hayes and Howley

Tommy Nobis
5 Pro Bowls, 1 All-NFL, All-Decade Team 60's
Johnny Robinson
1 Pro Bowl (6 AFL All-Star Games), 1 All-NFL (6 All-AFL), AFL All-Time Team
Chuck Howley
6 Pro Bowls, 5 All-NFL, SBMVP, all-time takeaway leader in Super Bowls
Bob Hayes
3 Pro Bowls, 2 All-NFL

There are a lot of ways the voters can go here. It would be ironic (and unfair) if Howley didn't make it because Hayes did.

IMO (like it really matters) this year's Class should be Howley and Nobis. I am not saying Hayes does not deserve because I clearly think it's nonsense that he is not in. I just think it's not likely that both Cowboys get in and Nobis is as deserving.

That list of 4 nominees is quite impressive. It'll be a very difficult decision; who the heck do you cut?

I'm especially happy to see Howley in the discussion. He hasn't been mentioned as often as guys like Cliff Harris, Bob Hayes, Drew Pearson, and, before he was inducted, Rayfield Wright. Although it isn't the same as being inducted, it truly is an honor to make that final group of 4.

Great comparison there among the linebackers.

That shows who the choice should be... Now, will the voters make the right decision?

Not only does Howley look good compared to Nobis, Howley also compares well to others who played his position.

Nobis vs. HOF MLB's of his era
Nobis
5 Pro Bowls, 1 All-NFL, All-60's

Nitschke
1 Pro Bowl, 3 All-NFL, All-60's, NFL 75th Ann. Team, MVP '62 Title, 2 rings

Butkus
8 Pro Bowls, 6 All-NFL, All-60's & 70's, NFL 75th Ann. Team, DPOY '69 '70

Buoniconti
2 Pro Bowls (6 AFL All-Star), 2 rings

Lanier
6 Pro Bowls (2 AFL All-Star), 1 ring, NFL 75th Ann. Team

One thing you can tell from this list is that the Hall loves MLB's. That's about the only thing that might help Nobis, because his credentials don't match any of the above (He's Buoniconti without the rings).

Howley vs. HOF OLB's of his era
Howley
6 Pro Bowls, 5 All-NFL, SBMVP, 1 ring

Bobby Bell
3 Pro Bowls (6 AFL All-Star), 1 All-NFL, All-Time AFL Team, All-70's, 1 ring

Dave Wilcox
7 Pro Bowls, 4 All-NFL

I look at this and ask (and not for the first time) why Howley wasn't inducted in 2000 instead of Wilcox. Not many OLB's in the Hall from this era though, especially when you consider that the OLB's who played outnumbered the MLB's about two to one.

Great research.

This is so long overdue.

It turns out that outside linebacker is the most underrepresented position in the Hall of Fame among players who have played since 1970. There are only 5 OLB's in the Hall from this era. As many as there are centers, and there's only one center on the field.

If the voters know this, Howley's induction should be automatic, and Chris Hanberger and Robert Brazile should soon follow.

How does the panel of Senior Candidates get chosen? Have either Howley or Hayes been a candidate for the senior inductee before? If they don't make it, will it be years before they get another chance, if at all? And how many people on this list can make it in?

I've only recently heard about the senior candidates, and I've never heard of more than one senior representative making it into the HOF. But admittedly I know little about the process... How long do you have to be out of the game to qualify as a senior candidate?
