After all of the talk by some about how poor the Dallas Cowboys have drafted in the later rounds, ect. I decided to go threw and check how all the teams in the NFL have fared in the 2005 - 2009 Drafts. I started with 2009, because this is the first class that has had the 3 years needed to fully judge how a draft class has performed. In this analyst I left out kickers, and punters when doing this list as they are there own breed in alot of ways.

I decided to break the players down into 4 different Categories:
Played < 3 Years - These are players that where not listed as having any games, associated with them according to NFL.com stats for the 2011 season, as well as not having any games associated with them for less than 3 years.

Regular Starter - This is someone who was a starter for their team last year, or was a starter for more than 1 year at any previous time. They did not have to be a starter for the team that drafted them, just a starter anywhere in the league.

2+ Starts - These are players that started 2 or more games at anytime in there career.

4+ Year Careers - These are players that had games played associated with them in nfl.com stats page for atleast 4 years.

Played < 3 years:
League Average - 39.6%
Dallas Cowboys - 30.7% (5th best)
Top 5 Teams: Houston Texans, Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys
Worst 5 Teams: Cincinatti Bengals, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Commanders (all these 4 tied for 5th worst), New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers

Regular Staters:
League Average - 14.4%
Dallas Cowboys - 19.2% (8th best)
Top 5 Teams: Denver Broncos, New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings
Worst 5 Teams: Washington Commanders, Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins, St Louis Rams, Detroit Lions

2+ Starts:
League Average: 36.1%
Dallas Cowboys: 38.4% (14th best)
Top 5 Teams: Houston Texans, Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, St Louis Rams, Detroit Lions
Worst 5 Teams: New York Giants, Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers

4+ Year Careers:
League Average: 38.2%
Dallas Cowboys: 46.1% (5th best)
Top 5 Teams: Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Dallas Cowboys
Worst 5 Teams: Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, St Louis Rams, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions

Very interesting analysis, thanks for putting this together.

I just want to note, that the Regular Starters for the Cowboys do NOT include Allen Ball, or Rob Pettiti.

Thank you for the analysis.

Any idea how they compare to the rest of the league in regards to the early rounds?

Thks for the info....

Its nice seeing facts......

Well....I expect to see a reply that says....

"Of course we have more starters.....our team sucks.....anyone could make our team"

"but......we only won one playoff game"

:)

Very interesting analysis. I assume by "later rounds" you mean 4-7?

We have done fairly well over the last few years in finding some role players late in the draft.

This would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad. I wonder why you chose to start measuring in 2005? Hmmm, could it be because 2005 is the one excellent draft Jerry has had in the last 17 years? Why don't you start at 2006 and run those numbers? Better yet, start at 2000 and run those numbers.

You do have a problem with facts that dispute your bull**** agenda.

Truth be told, I believe going back to 2003 would be completely fair IMO. Because as I see it, that's when Jerry pulled back a few steps with the hiring of Parcels. Bill came and changed alot within the organization.

Wouldn't mind seeing 1994-2002 numbers, but 2003 to now is really all that matters if you're looking to judge the FO longer term with how it's run now.

I did not choose 2005. I chose to start with 2009 (the first class that happened to have the 3 years needed to truly judge a class, and I decided to go back 5 years from that point, IMHO 5 years is enough to get a feel). That just happened to include the 2005 class.

I don't have the time to go back, and check all the other teams in the NFL, for additional years. But, I will go ahead and add through in 2000 and 2003. I am not going to do threw 2006, because I don't feel 4 years is enough time to give a legit picture.
2000 - Because you asked for it

2003 - Because that is when when Jerry Jones let Bill Parcells take over the drafting, instead of Larry Lancewell.

And just for reference, I will list the numbers threw 2005 in parenthesizes next to the 2003 and 2000 numbers.

2003:
<3 Years: 31.4% (30.7%)
Regular Starter: 20% (19.2%)
2+ Starts: 40% (38.4%)
4+ Year Career: 48.5% (46.1%)

2000:
<3 Years: 30% (30.7%)
Regular Starter: 18% (19.2%)
2+ Starts: 38% (38.4%)
4+ Year Career: 50% (46.1%)

This is absolutely comical coming from a guy who started a thread about how poorly we've drafted in later rounds using 2009 as a baseline.

This is interesting and useful. Any chance we can talk the OP into calculating the number of Pro Bowl and/or All Pro selections? Filling your roster is good but if you are a bad team you might be filling your roster with crap players and a great team like the Patriots will always have fewer available slots.

I didn't have Pro Bowl numbers. And I am not a huge fan of using Pro Bowl numbers, because the Pro Bowl is a popularity contest.

That said, I can say that the number of Pro Bowl quality players is few and far between in the 4th - 7th round from what I could tell.

Also, I used players that became starters, for any team, even if not the team that drafted them.
