Make a case for someone OTHER than Demarcus Ware. It is most probably going to go to a a player in the front seven since there is no player in the secondary that has played head and shoulders above the rest.

Serious Considerations:
Brian Urlacher (Bears - leads the NFC in total tackles, leader of the best defense in the NFC)
Aaron Kampman (Packers - leads the NFC in sacks, 3 Forced Fumbles)
Leonard Little (Rams - .5 sack behind Kampman for NFC lead, 6 forced fumbles!)

Ware has been very good. But he's no player of the year candidate.

Urlacher is clearly the guy

I disagree with your assessment on secondary players. As much as I hate to admit it, Dawkins has got to be a candidate. He has been playing great lately also.

92 tackles
1 sack
4.5 TFL
5 FF
3 INT's
12 passes defensed

that's some impressive #'s

I hate him, but Dawkins is having a helluva season...

Don't let yesterday's game skew your thought process. He's having a good season. Helluva??? That's up for debate.

There has been a precedent made for how a safety wins defensive p.o.y. honors: Ed Reed. Dawkins is having a great season, but it isnt close to what Ed Reed did his p.o.y. season.

Urlacher probably has the leg up right now, but if Ware can have an impactful game on Xmas, don't think he doesnt have a great shot. Honestly, Ware is slightly behind Urlacher in my book.

I'm not so sure about that

Ed Reed's stats from his 2003, his DPOY

71 tackles
1 sack
1 FF
7 int's
15 passes defensed

Reed has better int and passes defense #'s, but Dawkins does have 2 games left.

Let's hope he doesn't improve those #'s this weekend.:D Except maybe his tackle #'s. If he's making a lot of tackles, that would be a good thing.

Don't get it twisted. Dawkins won that game yesterday against the Giants.
Maybe he had a good game. Doesn't mean he's having a great season. Don't get the two twisted.

Can Merriman win even though he used steriods? Its amazing that ESPN never called him a cheater when they continually hammer TO. TO may be a punk, but he is no thug like the Halls, Merrimans, etcc that get all the love from ESPN.

Leonard Little should be in prison, Urlacher is the golden boy of the early season media Bear lovefest so he'll probably receive it.

Julius Peppers has cooled off considerably (no sack in the last 5 games). He won't win it cause his decreased productivity has coincided with the Pathers downfall (not that he is completely at fault, but when your team needs you the most, you better show up if you want to be p.o.y.).

I'm pretty sure he blocked 2 kicks or so as well that year.

Reed has better int and passes defense #'s, but Dawkins does have 2 games left.

Reed didn't win it in 2003, Ray Lewis did.

Reed won it in 2004, when he had two sacks, nine interceptions (one for a TD), three forced fumbles for turnovers and two fumble recoveries (both of which he forced, with one returned for a TD).

By the way, you can ignore Dawkins' stats for "passes defensed." The statkeeper in Philadelphia notoriously awards a "pass defensed" just for being NEAR an incomplete pass, whether you do anything or not. In seven home games, Dawkins has nine "passes defensed." In seven road games, he has three.

Didn't he set some sort of defensive return yardage record as well??

The problem I see with a lot of names here are although many of them are having good individual seasons as a whole, the D they play on is not that great, which a Player of the Year should help propel his unit as a whole:

Dawkins: yeah, great individual year, too bad the Eagles can't stop the run.

Ware: solid year, problem I have with Ware is he is inconsistent. We may have a game where he plays out of this world, then not hear his name called much at all the next two games, plus the Dallas D has been shakey at best and we can't get a consistent pass rush.

Peppers: Once again, the Carolina D has not been very good this year.

To me Urlacher is the easy choice. He is the leader of a dominant defense.

They weren't too dominant against woeful Tampa Bay. :p:
