This is my first thread evah!

3 years I think is a good standard for judging draft classes.

This is the Cowboys 2007 draft

1 (26) Anthony Spencer LB, Purdue - turning into a very good player. Took awhile and many posters called a bust after two years (or less). Good solid pick.
3 (67) James Marten OT, Boston College - washed out after one season. Claimed by Raiders, active for one game. Now with the Bears.
4 (103) Isaiah Stanback WR, Washington - Couldn't stay healthy, and when he was, couldn't make plays on the field. Most notable thing was a poster who always went around posting is 40 time. Caught 3 passes with the Patriots
4 (122) Doug Free OT, Northern Illinois - Started 7 games at RT. Legitimate chance at being the starting LT. Has a black mark against him as some posters say he isn't Jared Gaither.
6 (178) Nick Folk K, Arizona - Dependable, ProBowler. Then he wasn't.
6 (195) Deon Anderson FB, Connecticut - Solid special teamer, average FB. Nice nickname.
7 (212) Courtney Brown CB, Cal-Poly - For some reason the Cowboys staff like him at safety, despite his aversion to tackling. Now with the Giants
7 (237) Alan Ball CB, Illinois - Good player. Not a liablity when he mans a corner spot, and has a shot at being the starting FS.

Overall, an average draft. One Probowler (no longer with team), A potential Probowler (Spencer), and two potential starters (Free and Ball). I guess I could count Anderson as a starter, but he plays what, 8 plays a game?

I'd give this draft... a C+.

All of the above players will be entering an NFL training camp. Which, I guess isn't that bad.

A notable thing about this draft is the Cowboys trading with the Browns, and that gave many people pause, as it meant the Cowboys passed on Brady Quinn. For that alone, I guess the Cowboys should have a much better grade than a C+.

Undrafted FA's
QB Matt Moore, RB Jackie Battle, RB Alonzo Coleman, WR Jerad Rabb, WR Mike Jefferson, TE Rodney Hannah, OG Robert Turner, C Steve Risler, DT Ola Dagundro, LB Ded Harrington, LB Blair Phillips, S Jasper Johnson.

Alonzo Coleman hung around as practice squad guy. And the QB, Matt Moore... he will be competing with Clausen for the starting spot for the Panthers.

The Spencer, Free, Ball, and Folk picks are all great picks.

I'd give the draft a B

You pretty much have to count Felix Jones in this class as he is the player we got in 2008 with the pick obtained from the Browns.

So, we had 4 of 8 become starters (assuming Ball is starting at FS, which seems likely if not addressed in FA) -- one of which looks to be a pro bowler caliber player (Spencer), and a fifth pick that was a pro bowler (Folk), who just happened to go cuckoo for coacoa puffs. Then you have two project players that didn't work out and just one real "bust" (Marten).

And on top of all that, we managed to get a first round pick in the following year.

How is that not incredible drafting/trading? That's an A+ level draft in my opinion. If we do that every year, I couldn't be more happy. It's about as good as it gets.

My thoughts exactly

You get one possible pro-bowler in a draft, that draft is automatically A. Then the chance that you have one to two starters coming from it, it has to be A+. Seriously I thought Gossellin had issues with grades, but I guess we have the anti-homer here grading.

Folk was a pro-bowler and then he went to dumps, so technically we might have 2 pro-bowl players out of the draft. I know I am putting Spencer in Pro-bowl without him making it, but what he did last few games last season, was just pure domination. Wade wasn't kidding or hyping him, when he said he might be been the best LB on the field. Ware due to Injuries or other, wasn't as dominating as Spencer was.

Well then you couldn't count Felix in grading the 2008 draft, and I just don't think that's how anyone would look at it.

Good thread by the the OP...first or otherwise.

I wouldn't give it higher than a C.... Even Spencer and Ball can't make up for the blunders in the other rounds.

That draft is a solid B if we would have kept Folk and put him on IR last year. So I'd go B-.

Marten was a wasted pick. Stanback couldn't get or stay healthy so who knows how he would have turned out. Brown flashed potential but was a longshot 7th rounder.

with spencer emerging and folks implosion and getting two solid players/borderline starters in the 6th and 7th round id amount that to a B

then with marten busting along with stanback, it drops to a C

but with free now being a starter(whether he succeeds at LT or not we know he can start at RT) it becomes a B and then getting a 1st the next year i give it a B+

I didn't even consider the trades, just went by what they picked.

I think what hurts the draft in my opinion was Marten. He lasted a season on the Cowboys. I know when he Cowboys released him, they were hoping to stash him on the practice squad.. but a high third round pick, I figure should last longer than a season. Backup or otherwise.

You bring up valid points about the trading... and I should've considered it.

You don't necessarily count Felix toward the 07 draft, but you certainly count trading to get a first round pick in the next year's draft toward that 07 draft.

What you do with that pick counts for something different, obviously. Even if we'd squandered it on some bust, it was still a heckuva trade in 07.
