I'm thinking the 2007 draft class is beginning to produce some interesting player development. About the only player not playing as well as hoped is 3rd rounder James Marten. Barring injuries, we could potentially get as many or more starters from this class then even the 2005 class. We obviously won't know for 2-3 more years but it certainly possible we could end up with Spencer, Free, Stanback, Folk & Anderson as starters.
1) Anthony Spencer played adequately as our starter last year in fiirst 6 games before the injuried Ellis returned to take his job back. Now in the OTAs, minicamp & TC, Spencer is shining & the Cowboys plan give him a lot more snaps opposite Ware. We'll have a 3 headed monster pass rush in Ware, Ellis & Spencer. Spencer could supplant Ellis later this year unless Ellis has another pro bowl season.
2) no second round pick
3) OT James Marten: Didn't look good in 07 rookie season; some improvement observed (he's stronger) in 08 but not enough & moved to OG where he still having problem. But he could simply be a guy who doesn't begin road to show his potential until 3rd season. Will be in trouble in 09 if he doesn't show improvement over 08.
4) a. WR Isiah Stanback transitioning from QB to WR. He's already made a lot of progress this year; he's got speed, good hands & size which he's shown in TC. Still learning WR position but should show enough flashes this year to excite Cowboy fans. Hopefully has blowout season in 09 to clearly win #2 WR job; suspect Jerry Jones & others (including Jason Garrett) believe Stanback can become legit #1 eventually.
b. OT Doug Free: Looked good in rookie preseason and it continues this year in TC. Projected LT to replace Adams in 2-3 years; should get a lot of playing time in preseason games & could be activated in regular season if he becomes swing man beating out McQuistan.
5) no pick
6) a. Nick Folk: Won starter job in rookie season & went to first pro bowl.
That says it all.
b. FB Deon Anderson: Replaced starter Oliver Hoyte when he got hurt; won starter job as a result until Anderson got hurt. Fully recovered & now the starting FB; coaches like his play on STs as well.
7) a. CB Courtney Brown: Moved to FS early in rookie season; good ST player. While #3 on depth chart, he could move up to #2 as Hamlin's primary backup if he shows good blocking skills in preseason games.
b. CB Alan Ball: Coaching staff likes his play & looked like he could win #6 CB job but got hurt so he lost ground to Oglesby. Back & now competing for coveted #6 job (assume we keep 6 CBs but not 7) against Oglesby. Oglesby leads team in INTs but understand he gives up a lot of plays.
