2007 NFL Mock Draft - Round 1

1. Detroit Lions - Brady Quinn, QB Notre Dame
The Lions made a mistake in passing on Matt Leinart in the ‘06 draft. If they have a shot at either Quinn or Louisville's Brian Brohm in the 2007 NFL Draft, they can’t afford to pass.
2. Arizona Cardinals - Joe Thomas, OT Wisconsin
Matt Leinart has tremendous potential and plenty of weapons to work with. Now the team needs to protect him with some talent on the offensive line. Drafting Thomas would allow the team to move big Leonard Davis to guard, where he’s a more natural fit.
3. Oakland Raiders - *Brian Brohm, QB Louisville
The Raiders should capitalize on this opportunity to obtain a potential franchise quarterback. But don’t you just get the feeling Al will fall in love with some freak athlete, like Georgia Tech’s Calvin Johnson, and select him instead?
4. Houston Texans - *Frank Okam, DT Texas
Having moved to a 4-3 base defense, the Texans are still in need of another quality defensive tackles to add to the rotation .
5. Cleveland Browns - *Alan Branch, DT Michigan
There are rumors flying already that the Browns like Branch as an eventual successor to Ted Washington, who will be 39-years-old by the time the draft rolls around.
6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - *Calvin Johnson, WR Georgia Tech
Following a great rookie season, Michael Clayton hasn’t developed the way the Buccaneers had hoped, and veteran Joey Galloway will be 35 in November. Johnson would be a huge addition, especially in the red zone.
7. Green Bay Packers - *Adrian Peterson, RB Oklahoma
It’s obvious Ahman Green isn’t the back he once was, and Vernand Morency doesn’t appear to be the guy to fill that role. Peterson has a knack for making big plays, and a strong running game could go a long way toward making the eventual transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rogers a little smoother.
8. Washington Commanders - Gaines Adams, DE Clemson
Phillip Daniels is 33 years old, and has never really been a big pass-rushing threat. Adams might be a little small at 260 pounds, but he could contribute immediately as a pass-rush specialist. He also has the frame to put on another 10-15 pounds without losing much of his agility.
9. Pittsburgh Steelers - Leon Hall, CB Michigan
It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Ricardo Colclough isn’t back next year, and Deshea Townsend is getting up there in age. I‘m not convinced Bryant McFadden is the guy to take over for him as age catches up.
10. Tennessee Titans - *Ted Ginn Jr., WR Ohio State
If the Titans want to take full advantage of Vince Young’s abilities, they need playmakers who will help spread the field. And Ginn not only has the speed to stretch the field vertically on offense, he‘s a dangerous return man on special teams.
11. Atlanta Falcons - LaRon Landry, S LSU
The Falcons revamped their safety position last off season, and it has worked out for the better, but there is still room for improvement. Lawyer Milloy is 33 years old, and beyond the starters, there just isn’t much depth.
12. Minnesota Vikings - Marcus McCauley, CB Fresno State
The Vikings biggest need might be at wide receiver, but I expect them to address that area in free agency rather than adding another top draft pick to the mix.
13. St. Louis Rams - Quinn Pitcock, DT Ohio State
La'Roi Glover will be 33 next season and Jason Fisk is already 34. Claude Wroten was picked up in the third round last year, but looks more like a wave player than a full-time starter.
14. San Francisco 49ers - *Darrelle Revis, CB Pittsburgh
The 49ers are near the bottom of the league in pass defense and need an upgrade on the right side. Walt Harris is having career year, but will be 33 next season, so the position should be high on the team‘s list of needs to fill in the offseason.
15. Philadelphia Eagles - Brandon Meriweather, S Miami (Fl)
The Eagles generally address their lines early in the draft, but they really don’t have any pressing needs on either at this time. Michael Lewis has struggled at strong safety this year, and Sean Considine is a better fit at free safety. Meriweather, however, has some questions about his character, which could cause him to slide on draft day.
16. Miami Dolphins - Levi Brown, OT Penn State
The Dolphins’ offensive line has been inconsistent at best this year. Brown is a solid pass protector, who would add some athleticism to the unit.
17. Buffalo Bills - *Jake Long, OT Michigan
This is a little bit of a stretch for Long, who probably belongs about five to ten picks lower. But the Bills are desperate to find some consistency on their offensive line.
18. New York Jets - *Marshawn Lynch, RB California
The Jets like Leon Washington, but I’m not sure they look at him as a featured back. With Curtis Martin most likely done, it would be tough for the Jets to pass on Lynch if he is available at this point.
19. Carolina Panthers - Patrick Willis, LB Mississippi
As talented as he is, linebacker Dan Morgan just can’t be counted on to play a full season.
20. Jacksonville Jaguars - Paul Posluszny, OLB, Penn State
The Jaguars already have a solid defense, but Posluszny would be a huge upgrade over Nick Greisen on the outside.
21. New York Giants - Kenny Irons, RB Auburn
Brandon Jacobs is a great short-yardage back, but I’m not sure he’ll be as effective in a full time role once Tiki Barber retires.
22. Cincinnati Bengals - Quentin Moses, DE/OLB Georgia
With the future of David Pollack in doubt, there’s a significant chance the Bengals will be looking at linebackers in 2007.
23. New England Patriots (from Seattle) - Daymeion Hughes, CB California
The health of the Patriots defensive backfield has been a problem in recent years, and they could certainly use some depth at both cornerback and safety. Hughes is the type of physical player Bill Belichick likes in his defensive backs.
24. Dallas Cowboys - Justin Blalock, OG/OT TexasThe Cowboys offense has been inconsistent thanks in part to sub-par play by their offensive line. Bill Parcells isn’t normally big on drafting linemen this early, but this team really doesn't have any other big needs, with the possible exception of free safety.
25. New Orleans Saints - *Antoine Cason, CB Arizona
Mike McKenzie and Fred Thomas are decent corners, but Thomas is 33 and an upgrade would certainly be welcomed.
26. Kansas City Chiefs - *Dwayne Jarrett, WR USC
Eddie Kennison will be 34 in January, and Samie Parker is no more than a decent No. 2. Jarrett, who has great size, catches the ball very well in traffic, but doesn't really have game-breaking speed.
27.Denver Broncos - Marcus Thomas, DT Florida
The Broncos brought in a bunch of retreads last year, and the move paid off. But they could still use an upgrade, and another fresh body, to add to the rotation at defensive tackle.
28. New England Patriots - Jeff Samardzija, WR Notre Dame
The Patriots used a second-round pick on Chad Jackson in the 2006 draft, but Troy Brown is near the end of his career and Samardzija would give Tom Brady a dependable possession receiver.
29. Baltimore Ravens - Tanard Jackson, CB Syracuse
Jackson is a great athlete with good cover skills, who has been overlooked somewhat because he plays for a poor Syracuse squad.
30. San Diego Chargers - Paul Williams, WR Fresno State
Keenan McCardell is near the end of his career, Eric Parker is an adequate No. 2 at best, and Vincent Jackson has shown little sign of developing into a dependable weapon. Philip Rivers is going to need more than just Antonio Gates to work with in the passing game.
31. Chicago Bears - Joe Staley, OT Central Michigan
Having beefed up the defense and special teams in 2006, the Bears will probably look to the offense early in 2007 NFL Draft. With age becoming a little bit of a concern, any position along the offensive line could be addressed with this pick. If not an offensive lineman, the next logical choice is tight end.
32. Indianapolis Colts - Zackary Bowman, CB Nebraska
Bowman may not be back to 100% in time for the 2007 season, but he may find his way into the later stages of the first round. Before missing the 2006 season with a knee injury, he was looked at as a possible top-10 talent.
