2007 ROOKIE REPORT
Week II... September 16-17
Better late than never… Houston had to live through a season of slings and arrows last fall after the Texans passed on the likes of QB Vince Young and RB Reggie Bush with the #1 pick at the 2006 draft where they took DE Mario Williams with the top-pick overall. Williams struggled through an indifferent rookie season last fall, in part because he was slowed much of the year by a foot injury. Williams, in fact, really started to pay dividends last wek when he had two sacks, five tackles, three passes defensed and returned a fumble recovery for a TD in the team’s season opener against Kansas City. The Texans’ though, may not have to wait quite as long for DT Amobi Okoye, the team’s #1 pick this year to emerge. Indeed, Okoye, the 10th player selected at the 2007 draft who at just 20 is the youngest NFL player in the past 40 years, had a pair of sacks Sunday to help the Texans upset Carolina 34-21 and give Houston a 2-0 record to start the season, the first time in franchise has won both its first two games. Okoye also had 4 tackles on the day as he helped the Texans hold the Panthers’ normally solid run game to just 66 yards. And that was enough to win Okoye this week’s GBN ‘Rookie of the Week Award.’
Okoye, though, was only one of three rookies to post multiple sacks this weekend. Pittsburgh DE LaMarr Woodley, a second round choice this past April, or example, had a pair of sacks in the Steelers’ 26-3 win over Buffalo, while St. Louis DE Clifton Ryan, a 5th rounder this year, had two of his won in the Rams’ loss to the 49ers. In fact, the defense was away ahead of the offense, at least in terms of rookie production, in Week II of the NFL. The Texans' Okoye just barely edged out Washington S Laron Landry for this week's award, as the 6th player selected in this year's draft had 5 tackles, a 1/2 sack and broke up the Eagles' last gap scoring attempt in the Commanders' upset 20-12 win over Philadelphai in the Monday Night game. Meanwhile, Denver DE Jarvis Moss, the 17th player taken this year, also had a sack in the Broncos’ win over the Raiders, while DT Marcus Thomas, a 4th rounder, had an interception. Elsewhere, Buffalo MLB Paul Posluszny, another second round pick this year, took over the early lead in tackles among rookies as he had 12 in the Bills’ loss to the Steelers. Cleveland second round CB Eric Wright had 10 tackles and 2 pass break-ups in the Browns’ hectic 51-48 win over Cincinnati, while LBs Patrick Willis of san Francisco and Carolina’s Jon Beason, the 11th and 25th picks respectively this year, both had 8 tackles in their team’s games.
Offense stuck in neutral… Minnesota RB Adrian Peterson had another 118 yards of total offense in the Vikings’ overtime loss in Detroit. Peterson, the 7th player taken this past April who won last weekend’s first weekly rookie award, though, averaged under 3.5 yards per carry when he ran for 66 yards on 20 carries; Peterson also had 52 yards on 4 receptions. Meanwhile, Buffalo RB Marshawn Lynch, the 12th player taken this year, also barely averaged over 3 yards per carry in the Bills’ loss to the Steelers; Lynch though did have a 21-yard reception. In fact, the rookie receivers probably had a slightly better day than the backs. WR James Jones of Green Bay, a 3rd round pick, for example, had 4 catches for 75 yards, including a 46-yarder, in the Packers win over the Giants, while Detroit WR Calvin Johnson, the 2nd player picked this spring, had 4 catches of his own for 61 yards and a TD to help the Lions knock off the Vikings to go to 2-0. Meanwhile, Baltimore KR Yamon Figurs, a 3rd round pick, led special team rooks as he averaged 44.5 yards on a couple of KO returns against Buffalo including a 61-yarder.
