We're actually a pretty different team now from what we were in 2007.
Some of that is different players no TO, G.Ellis, A.Henry, Hamlin, Crayton, A.Glenn, Folk?, Roy31? etc. and some is players who are no longer as effective Columbo, Davis, Barber, Newman?, others?
Some of the new folks are younger players trying to grow into their roles (Jenkins, Dez, Felix, Scandrick, Austin, Beuhler, safeties - whoever they turn out to be, and now T.Smith and others?
Romo, Ware, Witten, Gurode, Bradie, Kosier, McBriar etc might be pretty comparable but lots of turnover, or fall-off in other areas when you stop to count them up. Not to mention the coaching change which we all hope will be for the better.
Great question. Til I started taking inventory I'd forgotten how different we really are.
It's probably why many are worried about the window closing on some of these guys who are not yet showing signs of fall-off but could in the near future.
I see totally different things, and you possibly could see that happen again this year
1. Wade was new head coach, and as we all know now, a soft coach when it came to discipline
2. Players were eager not to have to work hard, but the hard work past few years under parcells, they were still in shape to win
3. Jason was our new offensive coordinator so, he attacked teams that they had seen cowboys run before.
4. Same thing on defense, opposing teams hadnt seen wade style of defense in NFC east and we slipped up on teams
5. We had T O, who was a great wr back then. I still believe if terry glenn hadnt gotten hurt, we would have gone on to the superbowl and won
A. New head coach under Jason, I am sure that Garrett, Jason will have some new formations and stuff if has time in minicamp. OTAs, and training camp to get it going.
B. Same thing on defense, opposing teams in NFC east havent seen rob ryans defense before and we could slip up on teams before they know it and get us a running start and build momentum
C. Players say they feel regret now that they didnt apply themselves last year, and how the season stunk. If that is true, not trying to be a homer here, but just wait and see how season unfolds. However, if players are serious, they could come out like gamebusters. We all saw how soft wade ran the team, didnt have the players in pads, etc, under Jason Garrett that is changing with a new sheriff in town. Players will work now and will pay off in the long run.
D. Pretty decent draft to help us.
E. Some players that didnt play alot I think will really help us this year.
1. Dez
2. Ansah
3. Lee, didnt start out playing
4. I get suspicion that Scandrick, after adding 10 pds of muscle could be either dominant at Safety or Dominant at CB and really push Jenkins or Newman, if moved to safety, could be a force there. No secret Cowboys have asked him to move to safety and he didnt want too, but he has the speed to move there. Another thing to remember, how Scandrick would always injure some of our offensive players, now if moved to safety or starting CB maybe, Scandrick might be hurting offensive wrs etc, like Palomolu or Reed did.
5. Beuhler should finally make that jump at kicker this year, and with him kicking deep into endzone where hardly any returns, makes our special teams better.
6. I think Teddy Williams will surprise at CB if cowboys move him back to CB, remember was doing fairly well for not having played CB or football in 4 years, and to me, with his elite speed, could be a shut down CB. I think the key to all of this, get mini camp, OTAs so Rob Ryan can work with the kid, Teddy, because one of Ryan's forte was developing talented defensive backs. I trust Rob Ryan more doing that, then Campo.
7. Finally, maybe lady luck or whatever you want to call it will be on our side. Romo is settling down, getting married, among other things on the team, and having a rb like Murray that could push the dog out of Choice and Felix, is a good thing. And we will have John Phillips back at TE, pushing dog out of Bennett too.
