2008 Means Mash the Accelerator to the Floor

I expect the Offense in 2008 to break the team record for points in a season. That means eclipsing 1983's 479 points scored, or perhaps it could mean eclipsing 1966's average of 31.8 points per game. To equal that mark we'd need to score 509 points in 2008.

Call me crazy but I don't think that is impossible.

What would it take to achieve that? Well, the immediate answer would be Tony Romo would have to light it up. That's very true but there are so many things that could contribute to this.

Field position might be number one. The shorter the field, the easier it is to score. We probably need some Special Teams and Defensive scores added to the mix, but mostly we need the Special Teams to return the ball better than we have had in many years and the Defense to take it away and casue 3 and outs.

We have a Secondary assembled who should accomplish the takeaways aspect of this. The front 7 can add to this by getting after the QB and the ball carriers and forcing some fumbles. Pressure on the QB will always lead to some hasty throws. Against the assembled talent on the Corners this year that could be suicide. Jacques Reeves and his blazing speed isn't back there to pick on any more. If Henry and Newman are healthy this year no one will want to test us much. I think Mike Jenkins is going to be a stud. He's going to be the one DCs decide is the most likely target to pick on, and I don't think he will let us down. Prior to the Combines he was the top CB on every list out there. The only reason he fell is because a couple of other CBs got elevated by workout numbers.

Bold prediction time, DeMarcus Ware will get close to 20 sacks this year. Tighter coverage means he has more time to get to the QB. I'd love to see Ellis have another solid year. I'd prefer to see Spencer do it if I am being truthful. Not because I dislike Ellis or am sick of him. It's about beyond this year. If he comes on like we hope this team is so much the better for it. Zach Thomas could be a key to Ware getting that many sacks too. He's better at TE coverage than we have had in a long while. Take away the safety valve and the deer is in the headlights.

Would scoring 509 points mean we're running it up? Only if it means our starters are still in the game or we are throwing the ball 60% of the time with a solid lead. I don't want to do that. I want to see Felix Jones and Tashard Choice get meaningful carries in garbage time. I'd like to see our young O-linemen get time as well. Young WRs liek Stanback and Hurd and a young TE like Martellus Bennett are capable of scoring and I'd liek to see them do it and develop. I believe they can all still produce some points and kill the clock.

Mostly I want to see us put teams away, not allow them to hang close. I hate Prevent Defense. I hate it when the Offense stops trying to move the ball and is just playing the clock. Continue to play the opponent, continue to pressure the QB, continue to try and move the chains. Just don't do it with our starters in there. Go for the jugular vein and step on the gas.

We know who the stars are supposed to be and we know they can score a lot of points and do it quickly. It's the rest of the roster that will bridge the gap to the rest of the points.

In truth, I don't care if we break Offensive records or not. I just want to win every game. If that means it's the Defense who mashes the accelerator to the floor and holds teams to a club record fewer than 13.0 ppg to equal 1978's Defense. If we can break Defensive scoring records instead of Offense, that's just as acceptable.

Keeping the accelerator mashed down means cruise control is not an option. The post Thanksgiving swoon is my biggest Maalox moment. How great would it be to keep the Maalox on the shelf and not be on the fingernail diet? If anything I want to see this team more intense after Thanksgiving than they are before we eat turkey. Think of it like an amplifiere and turn up the damned volume.

I'd like it to be that once the playoffs arrive the rest of the NFL is scared to death how to face us. I don't want anyone to be chanting "we want Dallas." Let them chant, "please beat Dallas" so that they don't have to face us.

In the immortal words of Conan, "crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of the women." Step on the gas and pay no attention to the mile markers flying by, just get there.

If we hadn't done our swan song in late December, we'd probably have broken a few more Cowboy records. Hopefully we better prepared this year & Romo's increasingly field experience gets us over the hump, to several playoff wins, etc.

But this has to come from the Coach. Wade was the one that really set the tone= he has to be the one that makes the point that this year there will be no bye weeks in December and January.

I sure hope we see the on field improvement that it sure seems like we've made on paper.

My concerns are...
  1. Is Read the kind of ST's coach that can make this unit play to the considerable potential of folks like Felix & Pacman? Will the loss of Killer hurt coverage units?
  2. Having apparently solidifed the 3rd & 4th CB spots can we also trust that Roy in the context of that defense will not be exploited as some of our previous weak links have been? The chain is only as strong...
  3. Will Zach Thomas stay healthy and productive all year long?
  4. Will our run defense continue to be stout if teams decide to target it as the most penetrable part of our defense? Will Ratliff/Tank hold up?
  5. Was the late season swoon by our offense because teams figured out how to defend us? We need a fully healthy TO because Crayton is our most proven 2nd WR. We can hope TG returns, or Stanback or Austin develops, but the odds are not in our favor there.
Not trying to rain on anyone's parade. Just saying that ultimately this game isn't won on paper. We've all seen too many teams under or over achieve. It happens alot.

I think Jerry has done his part. He's made some very nice offseason moves that look great on paper. Its up to the coaches and players now to bring that to fruition.

Sometimes that's easier said than done. We're ultimately gonna have to fight scratch and claw. New Englands ultimate demise last year speaks volumes about what it takes sometimes to win a SB.

I think its gonna be fun though :)

that's a good concern, and one I've been wondering meself

alot of the times, it seemed that the opponent's kick-coverage teams were on our returners before they had much time to do anything, and the holes were few and far between, esp. on punt returns

I hope Read has improved dramatically

If Ware, Ellis and Spencer can all come up with double digit sack totals I am completely happy with the pass rush.

If this offense played against the AFC East like the Pats did last season then I could see them breaking all kinds of NFL scoring records. Being that we play in the NFC East I would be happy if we put up a copy of last years stats.

I love that accelator to the floor idea though Hos because that would mean the offense got it going early on in game. That was not always the case last season and I hope that changes this season.

In the past we also let up off the accelerator. I don't want to do that.

You should be optimistic Hos. I am.

This has become a passing league. You move the ball and score points with the passing game. You best defense the opponent by attacking and defeating their passing game.
Now you still have to run the ball to keep the opponent honest and your QB in one piece. And of course you still must control the opponents ground game and succeed in short yardage. Its just that all the rule changes have favored the passing game and increased the value of the QB position.

What has me excited is that I believe this Cowboys team may have more talent in the passing game on both sides of the ball, than any predecessor.

Tony Romo may very well be the best Cowboy QB. Time will tell. But what is not disputable is that he is a top QB in 2008. Lets say top 5. Now add a top 5 WR and a top 5 TE. That adds up to a top 2 passing offense, maybe #1.

I'm even more excited on the defensive side of the ball.
Canty, Ratliff and Hatcher are all active and effective interior pass rushers. They are young, improving and each have shown flashes of dominance.
The outside pass rushers Ware, Ellis and Spencer have me doing back flips. Spencer showed me a lot last year. He'll get more snaps than Ellis. I also see Ware making a run at 20 sacks. If everything breaks just right for us as a team, he might just make a run at 25. I believe he has that type of talent

Whats really exciting is teaming this pass rush with our new secondary. I believe Jones will win the starters job over Henry. I also think we have the leagues best CBs. Best starters, best nickel, best dime.
I believe we will have the leagues best pass defense.

If you are crazy for thinking this way, then put me in the rubber room next to yours. This team's offense right now rivals anything that the Patriots (or anyone else) can run out on the field. If the Cowboys don't score 500+ points this season it will be a shocker (of course injuries could always change things)

Every time I read about that '66 Cowboys offense averaging 31+ points a game, I am amazed. Hats off to Meredith and Co. They were outstanding that season

Bob Hayes is a huge part of the reason that team was so explosive. No one could cover him.
