April 18:
(10:00 AM): The big trade with Buffalo for veteran OT Jason Peters appears to have taken Philadelphia out of the sweepstakes to acquire Arizona WR Anquan Boldin. The Eagles are now expected to target a RB, either Knowshon Moreno, Chris Wells or Uconn’s Donald Brown with their remaining first round pick, the 21st overall. However, if the Eagles really wanted to make a statement, they could still try and package their 1st and third round picks in a bid to get Boldin and then use their 2nd rounder on a back like Pitt’s LeSean McCoy of Rashad Jennings of Liberty. If nothing else if that scenario did play out Eagles’ QB Donovan McNabb would have to stop complaining about the supporting cast around him!…Word out of Detroit where the Lions are holding their first mini-camp is that veteran QB Daunte Culpepper looks fit and sharp. Culpepper weighed almost 300 pounds when the Lions signed him out of semi-retirement in mid-season last fall, but he is reportedly down to his normal playing weight in the 260-265 range. Culpepper’s status, though, isn’t likely to affect the Lions decision whether to select Georgia QB Matt Stafford with the #1 pick at next weekend’s draft as Culpepper is viewed as a short-tern answer. What has to give the organization pause though is the fact that Drew Stanton, the Lions’ best current hope as a development QB has reportedly looked very shaky so far this weekend… Denver is the latest team to be dipping its toes into the Mark Sanchez sweepstakes. After biding their time for awhile after trading starting QB Jay Cutler to Chicago, the Broncos will reportedly be sending a full contingent, including new head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Brian Xanders, to Los Angeles on Tuesday for a private workout with the former USC star. In a perfect mile-high world, the Broncos would be able to sit back and nab Sanchez with the 12th pick at next weekend’s draft, however, with a number of teams reportedly after Sanchez including Washington, which has the next pick after the Broncos at #13, anyone who wants Sanchez s going to have to move up into the top 10. And the Broncos, with a second first rounder the 18th overall acquired from Chicago for Cutler, the Broncos are well-armed to go after Sanchez if they want him… So far, though, no one has called Seattle, which holds the #4 pick and is reportedly thinking of taking Sanchez for themselves as an eventual replacement for veteran QB Matt Hasselbeck. Speaking to the local media Seahawks’ G.M. Tim Ruskert said that the “hasn’t ringing off the hook“ so far. In fact, Ruskert says he doesn‘t expect the trading to begin until around the 7th pick or so because of the cost of signing players taken earlier than that. Just to spice it up a bit, though, Ruskert said that Seattle “was not afraid of taking a quarterback” and indicated that the team hadn‘t ruled out any position. Ruskert, though, did confirm what most so-called draft ‘experts’ having been saying this spring and that is it is weak draft, at least a top of the board, and “that there really are no franchise players in this draft.”
