We hear people bemoan the 2009 Special Teams Draft a lot here. Someone mentioned it again and I had a hunch and wanted to see if it was true. I think many would agree that this draft goes down as one of the worst in Cowboys history. My hunch: Yeah, it was a bad draft but there wasn't much to choose from, and many teams screwed up even worse. If that's any consolation
2009 Draft Players
Not only in Cowboy history, but this draft may be one of the worst classes of all time. Here are the hits: Stafford (double?), Orakpo (single?), Percy Harvin (double?), Clay Matthews (home run), LeSean McCoy (double), Mike Wallace (single?) and Jared Cook (single?). The rest are pretty much blah, blah, blah. There are a few scattered in there but nothing to write home about.
Only one Hall of Famer in the bunch that I see, and that is Clay Matthews at pick #26. Harvin went at pick 22. LeSean McCoy went at #53, Mike Wallace at 84, and Jared Cook at #89.
The Cowboys traded pick 20 (1st round for Detroit WR Williams) and later also traded pick 51. The best the Cowboys could have done in hindsight was take Matthews at pick 20 and McCoy at pick 56.
Washington chose OLB Orakpo with Matthews on the board. Huge miss. Baltimore traded the Matthews pick to NE, which then traded it to GB. Balt chose DE Kruger later in the 2nd and NE netted CB Darius Butler and probably something else with the trade to GB.
Worst case scenario would have been Matthews to Washington. Washington botched the 2009 draft even more than the Cowboys. Might help a little when looking back at the 2009 draft.
