We hear people bemoan the 2009 Special Teams Draft a lot here. Someone mentioned it again and I had a hunch and wanted to see if it was true. I think many would agree that this draft goes down as one of the worst in Cowboys history. My hunch: Yeah, it was a bad draft but there wasn't much to choose from, and many teams screwed up even worse. If that's any consolation :)

2009 Draft Players

Not only in Cowboy history, but this draft may be one of the worst classes of all time. Here are the hits: Stafford (double?), Orakpo (single?), Percy Harvin (double?), Clay Matthews (home run), LeSean McCoy (double), Mike Wallace (single?) and Jared Cook (single?). The rest are pretty much blah, blah, blah. There are a few scattered in there but nothing to write home about.

Only one Hall of Famer in the bunch that I see, and that is Clay Matthews at pick #26. Harvin went at pick 22. LeSean McCoy went at #53, Mike Wallace at 84, and Jared Cook at #89.

The Cowboys traded pick 20 (1st round for Detroit WR Williams) and later also traded pick 51. The best the Cowboys could have done in hindsight was take Matthews at pick 20 and McCoy at pick 56.

Washington chose OLB Orakpo with Matthews on the board. Huge miss. Baltimore traded the Matthews pick to NE, which then traded it to GB. Balt chose DE Kruger later in the 2nd and NE netted CB Darius Butler and probably something else with the trade to GB.

Worst case scenario would have been Matthews to Washington. Washington botched the 2009 draft even more than the Cowboys. Might help a little when looking back at the 2009 draft.

This is just another example of Jerry’s complete failure as a GM. He thought he was so cool calling it a ST draft. Like we are so good we draft for special teams. What a total loser that guy is.
There were 250 players chosen. There were likely 15 good players in that draft. Maybe 1 awesome player, 5 very good players, and 9 good players. The rest were all what many would consider unsuccessful draft picks.

As far as draft grades go, there was a roughly 94% chance of failure with any draft pick in 2009. Only a 6% chance of success.

That 2009 draft was littered with nothing but special teamers at best.

No cure for JDS - Jerry Derangement Syndrome.
All you’re doing is pointing out that the draft class as a whole was all time bad. Not sure how factual information is counted as defense for Jerry but some people just don’t like context.

The way we regard that draft as if it was some sort of layup drill we arrogantly tossed aside the importance of is much more exaggerated once you see how bad the whole class was.

As you said 94% of picks were busts in that draft, making it so that only 6-7 teams could’ve possible had good drafts (which is usually quantified as a draft where 2 or more picks contribute at a starter to star level).

How many playoff wins since 1995? Who else in the league is in that category? Do you see? Homerism is a disease of the mind. Just be honest. Life is better that way.

That's the thing most people always forget - it was a horrible draft overall. The worst in a long time. There were many teams who had bad drafts not just the Cowboys. It wasn't something exclusive to just the Cowboys.

A terrible draft by The Cowboys. Kept trading down to get more picks and players. Quantity over Quality.
They should make a documentary about it one day. How not to run a draft.
Part of the damage was done when they tossed a first and 3rd to the Lions for Williams. One of my angriest moments as a Cowboys fan.

Checking that link, that Top 10 in 2009 is about as brutal as I can ever remember seeing.

Jason Smith, Tyson Jackson, Curry, Sanchize, and DHB are all colossal busts. Not even like OK starters, like backup level or sub-NFL level players.

Crabtree and Andre Smith put in some workmanlike starter years. BJ Raji was a stud for 2 minutes and then fell off hard. The only guys who really justified their picks were Eugene Monroe and Stafford.

If 94% of what is available in the draft is backup crap, then what do you end up drafting? Backup crap. Just like almost every other team in 2009.
GB hit with Matthews (grade A). Detroit hit with Stafford (grade B). Seattle hit with Harvin (grade C). Philly hit with McCoy (grade B). Other than that, very little impact by anyone. Everyone else gets grade F.

Maybe the scouts told Jerry this is the worst draft as far as talent and best course is to go with numbers and hope you hit on something. That draft was nothing but a crapshoot. Worst draft ever.

Please just stop. What did they have 12 or 13 picks? it’s well established it’s one of the worst team drafts of all time. Stop being such a shameless homer.

Terrible draft and yes it is pretty difficult to do much in a draft that was the worst in my lifetime. Being said I for some reason hated the 2006 draft more, for the Cowboys as I felt they blew that way more. Though looking back on it, they did get Hatcher who was pretty decent.
