Rams talking contract with top prospects … Amid all the furore of the rumored trade talks involving Philadelphia QB Donovan McNabb, St. Louis has had begun preliminary negotiations with the agents for several top prospects for the 2010 draft including Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford, DTs Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska and Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy and even Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen. As reported in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Rams’ executive vice president of football operations Kevin Demoff indicated the talks to date have mostly exploratory and that they won’t actually start to talk actual contract parameters until early next month. Because they have the #1 pick at this year’s draft, the Rams can talk with contract with any or all of the top prospects, as well as sign their choice before the draft starts should they choose to do so.
Commanders still checking out QBs … The speculation around the NFL in recent days has been that Washington, which has the 4th pick overall, was starting to focus in on an OT at that spot rather than a QB. It appears that nobody told the Commanders. In fact, new Washington head coach Mike Shanahan is in the process of personally scouting most of the top prospects at the position for this year’s draft. In particular, Shanahan, along with a full front-office contingent from the Commanders, G.M. Bruce Allen and Scott Campbell, the team's director of player personnel, to work out Gators‘ QB Tim Tebow. As quoted in an article in the Washington Post Shanahan had a fairly glowing review of Tebow describing him as “a guy that brings everything to the table. He's just an off-the-chart guy. Those guys don't come around all the time. I just think he's something that's very special." Shanahan also reportedly said h thought that Tebow’s mechanics were improving and compared him to San Diego QB Philip Rivers whose delivery was also knocked before the 2004 draft. The Commanders will also be in Oklahoma on Monday to see Sooners’ QB Sam Bradford workout; they are also expected to further evaluate him at a private session or two before the draft. The Commanders will also be at Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen’s workout in early April, but so far they haven’t shown the same kind of interest in the former Irish star as in Bradford and Tebow. And that has led to speculation that the Commanders may go with the OT - presumably Russell Okung of Oklahoma State - with their #1 pick, and look to take Tebow with their second rounder.
