April 19
(12:01 AM): Could cat fight be looming in Big East … If the New York Giants want to acquire Alabama MLB Rolando McClain at this week’s draft, they may have to beat division-rival Philadelphia to him. There are reports that the Eagles, who select 24th in the first-round, but have a passel of extra picks to dangle as bait, are exploring ways to move up to get the former Tide star. At the same time, there are also rumblings that Arizona may also be interested in moving up to grab McClain to replace MLB Karlos Dansby who signed with Miami as a free agent. Meanwhile, back in Philadelphia, there are counter rumblings that the Eagles do want to move up, but their targets are actually safeties Eric Berry of Tennessee or Texas’ Earl Thomas. In fact, the latter scenario makes a lot more sense for the Eagles who are still looking for a replacement for Brian Dawkins. To get Berry, the top-rated safety in the 2010 draft, though, the Eagles will have to deal with Kansas City at the 5th spot or Seattle at #6 to ensure getting the former Volunteer’s star. And while the Eagles have 11 picks in the upcoming draft, the cost of moving up that high - likely both their second rounders this year or #1 in 2011 - would likely be prohibitive, although according to reports the Eagles may have at least talked with Kansas City about the 5th pick.

Of course, teams routinely talk to any number of other teams about a range of possible moves, both up and down. It also wouldn't be the first time that a team made a call to another team and talked about a deal not so much because they were actually thinking of making that move, but either wanted to mask another, or to entice another team into a move. The Eagles, though, may not be the only team interesting in moving up to that spot. There have been rumblings out of Buffalo, for example, that the Bills have contemplated trying to move up to the #5 pick to ensure acquiring either of LT prospects Russell Okung or Trent Williams. That would cost the Bills something like a 3rd this year and a 4th next spring which would be a big price to pay for a rebuilding team with too many holes. In fact, there are other rumors that Buffalo, which has the 41st pick in the second round, would like to trade back up into the late first round to take Florida QB Tim Tebow. That would still cost the Bills their 3rd rounder, but at least they would get an impact player.

Meanwhile, there is little new to report out of Cleveland or St. Louis regarding a possible trade involving the #1 pick as the Browns and Rams engage in a game of ‘mock chicken’ waiting for the other to blink… With the draft now just four days away most teams now have pretty much set their drafts boards, however, there is still some final last minute tweaking going on. Less than household names that are reportedly making their way up a lot of boards around the league include DTs Jimmy Sadler-McQueen of Texas A&M-Kingsville, a 300-pounder with sub-5.0 speed, and Darryl Jackson of Kean, a 315-pound run stuffer; rangy DE Jason Lamb (6-5, 275) of Baylor; 6-5, 330-pound OT Tyler Eastman of Maine; Ohio CB Thad Turner; UMass FS Jeromey Miles; and MLBs Alex Joseph of Temple, who isn’t all that big at just 6-0, 235, but can ran, and Mike Johnson of North Alabama, a poor man’s Rolando McClain who goes 6-3, 250 with 4.65 speed.

Wonder if he can play?
