If you can take a stab at it how many current Cowboys Starters do you feel should not be starting next season and how many Free Agents and Draft Picks do you feel need to come in and have the ability to start?

we have more holes than we are capable of filling

Positions that NEED new starters

Center
Left Guard
Right Guard
Right Tackle
DE
ILB
nickle CB (listing this as a starting position bc of todays game)
2 new safeties

we wont be able to replace all of these positions with better players in one offseason..but those are the positions that NEED new starters

Romo
Felix
(FB)
Witten
Miles
Dez
Free
(LG)
Gurode
(RG)
(RT)

(DE)
Ratliff
(DE)
Ware
James
(ILB)
Spencer
Jenkins
(FS)
(SS)
Newman

That's 9 possible new starters, however, I don't think we will find 9 new players. Finding 3 capable starters for the O-Line will be very tough, and we need possibly 2 new DE's for next year, Although I think Olshansky will be back next year. I think Bowen is pretty good and has a chance of winning the starting role next year.

I would think Sean Lee gets a chance at ILB given that we spent a 2nd round pick on him. 2nd round picks SHOULD be starters, and we've struggled to hit on players in the 2nd. Hopefully Lee can change that.

I think Ball and Sensabaugh's contracts are both up this year. We haven't had good safety play since Woodson left. A few names on the free agent list intrigue me. Would Champ Bailey accept being a FS at this point in his career?

I'm at the point that I no longer Spencer back. Other than 1/2 of one year, he has been JAG.

Rank them in order of priority.
Here's my ranking:
RG
RT
S
ILB
CB
DE
LG
C

Too early to say. Only a few players have played at all this year. The rest have been going through the motions. At the end of the year if that is still the case, most of them need to be gone.

But right now, based on half a season, I'd guess 9-12 of the 22 starters are replaced. without naming names, 3 OL, 1 maybe 2 DL, 2LBs, 1CB, 2 Safety, 1RB.

At the very least I would like to see Butler push him for playing time with what's left of the season.

Next year we need to replace Colombo and BIgg for certain on the O line. Brookings is done. Both Safeties and we need a nickel CB. In two years we need to replace gurode and kosier. And James. Olshansky needs to go now as well. So year one 7 need to go; year two 3. On probation: Jenkins and Spencer.

Damn, thats pathetic. I was sure we did not have that many holes going into this season. Man, its almost a daunting task at this point.

Can't replace every position that needs an upgrade, nor is it necessary to. We have to remember that players performances are interconnected, and that by replacing some players others may not be as much of a problem. For example, if we only had one weakness in the O-line rather than 3, there would be fewer weaknesses for the defense to attack and therefore it would be easier for the offense to cover that weakness.

I think the priorities are

2 O-linemen - preferably RG & RT
1 ILB
1 CB
1-2 safeties

This is a lot but not outlandish, and could make a huge difference.

Good point, thats true.

unfortunately we can't blow the whole thing up in one year so here goes:

QB- Romo
RB- Felix/TC
WR- Dez and Miles
TE- Witten and Bennett
LT- Draft Pick or FA
LG- Kosier
C- Gurode
RG- Mankins
RT- Free

Assuming we stay in the 3-4 (which is 50-50)

DE- Spears
DT- Brent
DE- Rat (yes i did)
OLB- Ware/Spencer
ILB- James/Lee
CB- Newman/Jenkins/Draft Pick
FS- AOA
SS- Church

Not bad. If we could get a top LT and Mankins for the O-line I think that would make us very strong. Gurode can do a reasonable job if surrounding by good players, and Kosier is solid if he can stay healthy.

You'll see it.
