This is a wish list for our defense. Again this is MY wish list, but feel free to rip it apart.

1. Hire a good defensive coordinator
2. Switch to a 4-3

Here's what I want:

DE: Jay Ratliff
DT: FREE AGENT
DT: DRAFT PICK
DE: Demarcus Ware

OLB: FREE AGENT
MLB: Sean Lee
OLB: DRAFT PICK

CB: DRAFT PICK
CB: Orlando Scandrick
FS: DRAFT PICK
SS: FREE AGENT

Trade Newman for any draft pick we can get.
Trade Jenkins (let the insults begin, lol) for the best we can get

10 TOTAL DRAFT PICKS:
4 Defensive Picks
6 Left, can be used for anything else

Tell me what you think.

leave WARE at LB

and though it would be interesting to have that many new faces, it would take a long time for them to become a team

Only way i'd agree with trading newman or jenkins is if we got peterson which will not happen

Other than having a bunch of high draft picks the following year, I can't think of any other positives.

7 of the 11 starting positions on defense you want to aquire in the offseason?

:laugh2:

Also, if we go 43 it would make no sense to move Rat to DE.

Ratliff would be a DT in a 4-3. Ware should not be moved from a 3-4 OLB. That's the biggest argument against switching to a 4-3.

I'm all over a new DC.

We'll go 6-10 with that kind of turnover.

Compared to being 5-9 right now??

Ware has been the only consistent player on this Defense for years.

Bottom line is, this defense has been garbage this year and needs to go through a major make up. Sacrificing a year is worth it, IMO.

Switching to a 4-3 may not be bad. There is potential for the right fits with whats in in place without the huge turnover. But with the way the 3-4 is played its not always a traditional 3-4. With so many sub and blitz packages the Boys play, forms of the 4-3 are shown on many downs. But for thread sake here you go...

DE- M. Spears(resigned) or let Hatcher take over, which is whats going to happen without a defensive switch anyway. V. Butler comes in on passing downs. Or a Draft pick(Marcel Dareus??Daquan Bowers??)
DT- Ratliff
DT- Brent/ S. Bowen
DE- A. Spencer - he could be a Freeney/Mathis type of player in the 4-3

OLB- D. Ware -with the right alignments and blitz packages his role wouldnt change much
MLB- B. James - Lee is the future here, but Bradie has a year or 2 left in him.
OLB- S. Lee- He starts here for a year until James is gone. (Butler gets some play at OLB also)

CB- Newman- with a draft pick or free agent hopefully taking his place by training camp.
CB- M.Jenkins- Pro Bowl one year to a disaster the next. Gotta give him another chance.
FS- DRAFT PICK or Free Agent- Move Ball back to corner
SS- Free Agent or DRAFT PICK- Sensabaugh is horrible

So much wrong with this.........

I'd rather see

RDE: Adrian Clayborn (2nd round)/ Stephen Bowen
NT: Jay Ratliff/ Josh Brent
LDE: Jay Ratliff/ Sean Lissimore
ROLB: DeMarcus Ware/ Brandon Williams
RILB: Sean Lee/ Casey Matthews (4th or 5th round)
LILB: Bradie James/ Leon Williams
LOLB: Anthony Spencer/ Victor Butler
CB: Terrance Newman, Bryan McCann
CB: Mike Jenkins, Orlando Scandrick, Alan Ball
FS: Champ Bailey (free agency), Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Barry Church

Very true. The Defense has been bad. Major changes need to happen. Mostly secondary issues. But a new coordinator needs to happen now!!

They were the number 2 defense the year before. I say we give them another year with a new d coordinator (hopefully Capers) and some draft picks. Blowing the whole thing up would be an overreaction IMO.

So we'll pretty much end up with the same record we're going to this year?

You really think we could pick up four rookie starters in one draft? We're usually lucky if we get more than one.

That much turnover is never good. I think at most we'll have three new starters next season (Lee, a free safety and a lineman).

Newman and Jenkins were one of the top CB tandems in 2009, and something tells me if they get help from a bona fide free safety, they'll return to form.

I do think we could make an effective switch to the 4-3, but I'm not sure Garrett wants to if he stays head coach. I don't think it really matters, though, either scheme can be effective if the coaching is good.
