2011 NFL Mock Draft: How Far Might Jake Locker Slide?

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2010/11/16/1817436/2011-nfl-mock-draft-andrew-luck-jake-locker

Note, I put this in 3 groups, top of list if dallas picks around 5th slot, 2nd grouping and down to about the 17th slot.I also highlighted ones most of you like or interested in or what the cowboys might be interested in.

1. Carolina Panthers (1-8): Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford. Fans in Charlotte may crave Bill Cowher, but don't be surprised if they target the Stanford duo of Luck and Jim Harbaugh.
2. Buffalo Bills (1-8): Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama. Locker is a distinct possibility here, but Buffalo needs guys in its defensive front seven that can beat blockers. Pairing Dareus with Kyle "Meatball" Williams would do wonders for the league's worst run defense.
3. Detroit Lions (2-7): Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU. Says Kadar: "It's always good when team needs match up with top talent. That's the case here."

4. Dallas Cowboys (2-7): Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska. Kadar: "Current starter Mike Jenkins apparently can't tackle. That is one of Amukamara's best assets."
5. Cincinnati Bengals (2-7): Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson. Can Marvin Lewis survive yet another down year in Cincinnati? If he does, he'll likely look to upgrade his disappointing defense. Bowers is having a monster season.
6. San Francisco 49ers (3-6): Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn. Kadar: "This is interesting because San Francisco seems to need a quarterback. A.J. Green would also be tempting. But the disruptive Fairley could immediately plug in opposite Justin Smith."

7. Minnesota Vikings (3-6): Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina. This is the second team (after Buffalo) that should seriously consider Locker, but with Jared Allen slipping a bit, the Vikes won't feel too bad going BPA.
8. Arizona Cardinals (3-6): A.J. Green, WR, Georgia. Ken Whisenhunt might consider Locker, too, but the Cardinals have long been a BPA team, and Green would hedge the team's bets with Larry Fitzgerald.
9. Denver Broncos (3-6): Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue. Let's be honest: nobody knows what Josh McDaniels is going to do on draft day. We simply put the most logically illogical player in this spot; Kerrigan fits McDaniels' odd taste in 3-4 linebackers.
10. Cleveland Browns (3-6): Julio Jones, WR, Alabama. Kadar (who, by the way, is a Browns fan): "The Browns tried to beat the Jets by throwing to Evan Moore, Chansi Stuckey and Ben Watson. What's missing there? A No. 1 receiver."
11. St. Louis Rams (4-5): Akeem Ayers, LB, UCLA. Ayers' coverage abilities will get him drafted early. Kadar, for the record, wasn't a fan of this pick: "It would be hard to pass on a wide receiver here, especially when the Rams quietly have one of the best defenses in the NFL."
12. Washington Commanders (4-5): Allen Bailey, DT, Miami (FL). If their performance against Mike Vick on Monday Night Football was any indication, Washington needs as much help defensively as it can get.

13. San Diego Chargers (4-5): Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa. This is a nice risk to take for the annually quirky Chargers. Kadar: "This is another place a wide receiver could go. However, San Diego still needs to replace Igor Olshansky."
14. Houston Texans (4-5): Brandon Harris, CB, Miami (FL). The league's most pathetic pass defense needs reinforcements. Kadar agrees: "Team him with Kareem Jackson for Houston's version of Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hall."
15. Kansas City Chiefs (5-4): Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame. Dwayne Bowe is coming along nicely, but the Chiefs need more help for Matt Cassel. OC Charlie Weis will have great familiarity with his former ND recruit.
16. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-4): Jake Locker, QB, Washington. Finally, the purported 2010 No. 1 overall pick is off the board. Kadar: "Don't be fooled by David Garrard's performance Sunday. This is a good spot for Locker."
17. Tennessee Titans (5-4): Janoris Jenkins, CB, Florida. Tennessee's no-name defense has sprung leaks of late. Kadar: "Alterraun Verner was a great choice this year, but is more of a third corner."

Thanks for posting all these articles, Joe.

I will say I am not sold on Amukamara, but I've only seen him in one game. Justin Blackmon of OK State (a sophomore) made him look bad. Then again Blackmon is a legit NFL prospect. I have been reading a lot of good things about him though.

If Locker falls to our pick in the 2nd round does anyone think we would think about taking him to groom behind Romo? I'm not sold on McGee, and if he pans out we could trade him for more picks.

If he fell into the second round, it could be worth taking him...assuming we have him rated at least that high.

Some of these players turn out to not be rated as highly (by the actual NFL clubs) as these mock websites sem to think. Jimmy Clausen comes to mind.
But if really is close to BPA when we pick in round two, I could see you idea working.

I do agree with them that Jacksonville may finally look at QB. Garrard is fine (in fact, he is the second rated QB in the AFC right now) but he is also getting older and will never be elite. They could bring in and groom a QB for a couple of years and be fine. They were smart not reaching for a QB at the 10 slot last year because they knew this year's crop would be better....even if they wait into rounds 2-4.

Locker is probably the first player taken in the 2011 draft. I don't see any way a QB like Locker falls to us in the 2nd round. If he did, I would trade him to the highest bidder and never look back.

I doubt he's the first player taken. If Luck and Mallet return to school, Buffalo may feel obligated to take a QB, but if Carolina beats them to #1, they won't reach for Locker (Will take Luck or Mallet imo).

Locker's draft status will be determined by his senior bowl week/game. If he shines, he's back in the top 5-10. If he struggles, he could fall to the bottom of the first/top of the second.

the thing about locker is this, he is falling, kinda like the packers QB Rogers, who fell to the 24th slot. Dont think locker will fall below that, just like Quinn got taken at 24th. If you remember one year, Dan Marino even fell to bottom of first round too.

Great examples of how wrong the pundits can be.
If Quinn "fell" to you at 24 and you grabbed him--you reallyscrewed up.
If Marino fell to you at the end of rd 1 and you took him, you are a hero.

i didnt say we would take quinn, if you remember, we traded that pick to cleveland, and they took quinn, we got extra picks for quinn

just trying to say that some decent qbs were taken at 24th slot, and some misses at qb

and that i dont think locker would fall to us in 2nd round. He will be gone by then.

I wouldn't take Locker until the 2nd round. I don't think he's progressed since his sophomore year, and I think he's two years away from ever seeing an NFL field.

The #1 trait I look for in a QB is accuracy, and Locker hasn't reached 60% completion rate in a season in his entire college career.

The #2 trait I look for in a QB is the ability to quickly read through progressions and find your 3rd and 4th reads so that the defense has to cover the entire field, and Locker has never impressed me in that category. Of course, his OL at UW is so putrid he often times doesn't have time to find his 3rd or 4th read.

Which brings me to another concern I have with Locker ... he's been beaten up and thrown around at Washington so badly, I worry he might have David Carr syndrome. Just beaten up and defeated so badly that all of his moxie and confidence has been rung out of him. He's like a dog that cowers now. Cutler at least kept games competitive at Vanderbuilt, Locker is getting beaten by 30 points or more 4 times this season.

Oh, I was not clear. I didn't litterally mean "you", Joe. In "you" I meant any GM who made those choices.

Do you mean Andrew Luck?

If you really think Locker is going to be the first player drafted overall I'd love to make a monetary bet with you.
