Have to assume that since the league year is starting tomorrow, the NFL will advise teams that they should proceed with an uncapped year.

6 year free agents + no cap

Doug Free becomes a restricted free agent correct?

But further the following people can be cut without penalty.

- Leonard Davis
- Marc Colombo
- Terence Newman
- Marion Barber
- Roy Williams

That would certainly fit in with Jerry saying we were going to cut the payroll this year.

Replace Colombo's salary with Smith's. reduction
Replace Newman's salary with Nnamdi's. Increase, but solidifies the position.
Replace Marion Barber with a later draft pick. reduction
Replace Roy Williams with a later draft pick. reduction
Replace Leonard Davis with a free agent? reduction or push

add: Michael Huff

I think they agreed the official league year starts Monday, but yeah, that's what it looks like.

I think you're asking for a bit much.

I think its obvious that these are the 4-5 guys Jerry and Stephen are referring to and they are waiting on the rules as to whether we will be penalized for releasing them.

It doesn't appear that we will and thus they should all be gone.

I think Newman is that 5th guy and I think getting Nnamdi might be part of the process in determining whether or not we keep Newman.

I have a huge man crush on Nnamdi but we are not getting him. Not as long as we have any concern whatsoever over cash. This guy is he best available period regardless of position and will get paid huge dollars. He will make more than Tony Romo.

I do think Dallas starts releasing guys as you mention. But I expect those replacements will be draftees and much cheaper free agents.

Barber, Colombo and Davis (depending on the next rounds) would be the only one's I'd let go.

Newman and Williams can still play. I'd see if Newman would rework his deal, but Williams won't cost anything if they release him next year.

I respect your opinion of course, but I want to point out two things about the 2010-2011 nfl season.

1. Our franchise quarterback was injured for the season.
2. We gave up the 7th most total yards passing, 4th most average yards per attempt, and the most passing touchdowns in the league...

These demand extremes.

First extreme was drafting a linemen in the first round. The second extreme is fixing the secondary.

If nnamdi was already on our team, would we release him because he was too expensive? Certainly not.

Terence Newman is slated to make 8 million dollars in 2011. Newman essentially has 30 million dollars on a 4 year contract.

Newman is scheduled to get a huge increase in pay in 2011 from 2010.

7 year contract extension was worth 33.4 million dollars, with a 13.1 million dollar signing bonus.

I'm not sure how much Nnamdi wants but I definitely think you can subtract from Newman's salary, and put that towards improvements.

You get Nnamdi and Huff replacing Newman and Ball... and you're definitely on the right track to fixing the secondary.

Newman's contract is a bit ridiculous actually, especially if his play continues to deteriorate.

If it was monopoly money (or Jerry's) I'd do as you suggest.

But they won't. They are not going to lay out that kind of cash period. It is just as easy for them to say Scandrick had metrics as good or better than either starter and Ball was a quality nickel and dime CB two years ago....

They have a couple more picks to make in the top 100. I suspect FS and CB are on the short list of desired players.

Dallas has the highest payroll in football. Under any system they'd want to peal that back. I seriously doubt they hand out big up front money when the cuts don't actually save cash until the game checks don't have to be paid.

Cutting Roy Williams and Marion Barber puts us into a completely different category.

Roy Williams is 5.1 million (salary), not to mention getting him off the books in an uncapped year.

I believe Marion Barber is 4.2 million (salary).

Together that is 9.3 million dollars saved, and both players off the books.

Nnamdi is not going to be a cowboy, it is just too amazing to be true I think. Especially if we want Huff, give our guys contracts, the rookie contracts and I would assume we get other FA guys like a guard or DT. Needless to see I would not be able to control myself if we dominated FA by getting Huff and Nnamdi. Gotta say, I would rather take Nnamdi and draft a safety.

That's why I think Saturday's picks will tell a lot on how we go forward in FA. If we draft a safety in the 2nd, forget Huff. If we draft a CB, then Newman will probably just restructure/take a pay cut and stay. If we don't draft a CB at all, we will either pursue one, possibly Nnamdi, or stick with what we have. Basically, if we address either position early, you can forget signing a FA to fill that need.
