DALLAS COWBOYS
Round 1 (16 overall) Zack Martin, T, Notre Dame
2 (34). Demarcus Lawrence, LB, Boise State
4 (119). Anthony Hitchens, OLB, Iowa
5 (146). Devin Street, WR, Pittsburgh
7 (231). Ben Gardner, DE, Stanford
7 (238). Will Smith, LB, Texas Tech
7 (248). Ahmad Dixon, DB, Baylor
7 (251). Ken Bishop, DT, Northern Illinois
7 (254). Terrance Mitchell, DB, Oregon

The Zack Martin pick was made by Jerry Jones’ son Stephen—Jerry later lectured him about choosing the guard over Rockstar quarterback Johnny Manziel. The exact quote: “Son, I hope you're happy. But let me tell you something: You don't get to own the Cowboys, you don't get to do special things in life, by making major decisions going right down the middle. And that was right down the middle.”

It was right down the middle like a bowling ball on a strike—an analogy that’s extra ripe considering how Manziel’s career wound up in the gutter. Martin has become arguably the game’s best guard, and arguably the best player on what is inarguably football’s best offensive line.

The Cowboys knocked down all 10 pins on the Demarcus Lawrence pick, too. Lawrence, who had 14.5 sacks last year, took a little longer than Martin to reach stardom, so let’s call it a spare instead of a strike. Nevertheless, he was franchise-tagged this offseason and, as an elite run-defender and dozen-plus sack guy, should get a lucrative long-term deal in 2019.

The Cowboys had to trade the 47th and 78th overall picks to move up and get Lawrence at 34 in the second round. It was worth it, but their diminished draft capital carried a small price, as no other players in this class amounted to much. Anthony Hitchens received $25 million guaranteed from the Chiefs as a free agent this past offseason, but he did not quite become a true every-down player in Dallas. If the Cowboys truly valued Hitchens, they would have re-signed him, rather than spending this year’s first-round pick at his position (Leighton Vander Esch at 19).

Getting stars at Picks 1 and 2 is enough to make most drafts an A. But the rest of this draft—which, granted, had five seventh-round picks—amounted to nothing long-term.

Grade: B+

Submitted for your reading pleasure and discussion. Go cowboys and have fun!

Didn't Mitchell have a good year, stats wise anyways, last year? 4 picks or so?
Sure, he didn't pan out here, but IMO we got rid of him pretty quickly.
I would give it an A-

@T-RO , wasn't the third given up to move up for Lawrence?

B+ is probably fair. People forget that Lawrence was a big fat zero in two of his four seasons. It took last season just to make him a slightly bad second round pick and not a complete bust.

Quality? Yes Quantity? No Only 2 players left 5 years later. But they're a good 2 but only 1 as of last season.
You have to count players that move on, too, CC. Hitchens is every bit a part of that draft class, same as Mitchell as John said above. Martin, Lawrence, Hitch make it an A, imo. Mitchell is the cherry.

Thanks for the content, Loc :star:

As per usual, it was tons of threads about how these late round nobodies were steals, everyone's pet cats and sure-fire HOFers before they even played their first NFL down.

Ya know, the same kind of groundless sunshine pumping that is going on all the time with these type of players.

Keep picking offensive linemen in the 1st or 2nd round and you'll rarely get below a "B" grade.

It is absolutely fair. Prior to last year (a contract year), Lawrence was headed towards busthood.

Getting the Martin pick right over Johnny Football is the biggest reason why Stephen has much more influence over football operations than he did prior to the pick.

Had Manziel starred in Cleveland, Jerry would have very quietly moved Stephen to the sidelines of personnel development.

Whether this is a good thing for the team long term is very much in the air. He's better than Daddy, but that's not saying much.

Martin was a no-brainer.

Lawrence’s production last season has justified the pick.

If it was not for those two that draft would have resulted in an F.

I made an A on my high school biology test once. That picture of the woman was easy. I studied my dads playboys very close.

Zack Martin - All Pro.

D-Law - All Pro

Hitch - 4 year starter, now paid as a top 5 MLB.

Mitchell - didn't keep him around but he's stuck around in the league.

Easy A draft.

Anyone that judges this anything below an A needs to stop judging.
Zack Martin isn't just a star he is the best interior OL in football ALREADY.
Dallas got him at pick 16.

Demarcus Lawrence is the NFL's returning sack leader. Dallas traded up to get him at 34.

Hitchens just made 45M in the open market and will return a 4th round pick.

But you wanna deduct points because of 7th round picks? ROFLMAO.
