To describe the Cowboys defensive tackle situation, the word “patchwork” might come to mind. But so does “effective” as defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli has utilized his veteran depth well to get quality production from his interior defenders on the line of scrimmage.

Despite being hit by various injuries at the position, Dallas has held up on the interior, but depth is needed and could be a position the Cowboys address via the NFL Draft. Marinelli loves to rotate as many linemen as possible to keep players fresh and adding big bodies in the middle who can stop the run and get after the passer are at a premium in today’s NFL.

Below are five defensive end prospects at the college level worth keeping an eye on:

i disagree especially if we dont resign Melton,we are trying to build a solid 8 man rotation but right now we dont have a solid group at all.

Jerry has said 1st round picks start. A rookie isn't going to start over crawford and also dallas has said they don't draft a 1 tech in the 1st so I don't think they will spend a 1st on a DT.

Jerry hasn't been calling the shots anymore for a few years now.

Malcolm Brown and Danny Shelton are impact 1-Tech's. Plus, the whole "we won't draft a nose tackle that high" mentality only came up in the team's excuse for passing on Floyd. We are also now talking about a late 1st rounder instead of a top15 pick.

Yes he has. Its joint choice but Jerry has say. Also Stephen and Marinelli has said the same.so the 3 of the guys that have the final say on defense all say the same thing

It also came up last year when people wanted Jernigan and Marinelli said it at the combine. He said that 1 tech are easy to find later in the draft to need to spend an early pick.

And yet, we're two years into Marinelli in Dallas and not a single respectable 1-tech has been added to the team since he arrived. And it's debatable whether Marinelli will even be here two months from now.

The team used to have different views on OL as well. Views change.

Goldman or Brown for me. Both guys could probably play both the 1 and 3 and would beast alongside Crawford. Personally would have no problem picking either in round one, not sure if the Cowboys view the position at a premium though.

Pass rushers are what this team needs not a 1 tech. Give me someone who can get to the qb. Look at all the great defenses and dlines. They have something in common. A great pass rushing DE. I would take a top DE in the 1st over a DT any day.

Draft Malcolm Brown and sign Charles Tuaau (TAMU-Commerce) as a UDFA

I think they viewed Jernigan as second rounder. If they view one of these DT's similarly and all their first round graded players are off the board when they select, then they could take one of these DT's in the first. But you are right that I don't think they'll have a first round grade on either player.

Not to change the subject, but is anybody else happy to see Dane Brugler writing draft columns for the Cowboys?

Right I just think they value DE more than a 1 tech. I think they would go pass rusher more than a run clogger.

Got to think about marinelli. He calls his guys rushman and he tells them to play the run as they rush.

The thing is they don't seem to value that LDE position as highly either. But I'm not sure they would go after a pure WDE this year given the investment in Lawrence. If they take a DE with a high draft pick, I think it will be a versatile guy that can play either DE position.
