Who ya got?

Spieth started strong, but I think Jason Day is the one to beat.

Rickie Fowler pulled a... well, Rickie Fowler... +8 for the first round...

I'm rooting for our favorite Cowboy Fan, Jordan Spieth...

I hope Spieth makes everybody forget about Tiger over the next decade....so tired of hearin about whether or not he'll ever be Tiger again......who cares, this Spieth kid might could obliterate Tiger's accomplishments.....and he's from DFW! (Nevermind Philthy trying to claim him as their own cause of his parents bein from there lol)

Spieth fan here. He is a Cowboys fan just like my son. I see my son in him. He had a melt down today after he was -9. He is neck and neck with Rory. Should be a fun weekend. Godspeed Jordan. This old Giants fan and his Cowboys fan son are rooting for you

I literally came into this thread before his quad bogey and almost posted that he had essentially won lol, glad I waited, at least I can say I didnt jinx him.......a whole mess of people on twitter did though......

Oh well, Spieth is still on track to annihilate alot of records, assuming he doesnt overdo himself, or fall off the face of the earth like Tiger did with injuries and scandals.....
3 Masters in a row 2nd,1st and 2nd place finishes, still pretty friggin legit......

That was an epic choke job but considering he had no idea where he tee shots were going all week it's amazing he even made the cut much less had a 5 shot lead today.

Spieth's choke on 12 was incredible. If anything just don't short arm it into the drink! Hit the sand on the backside.

Woods is old news.

Maybe

But golf is even half way relevant today ONLY because of Woods. He brought in the casual fan, the publicity the marketing and the dollars that golf is benefiting from today

He also brought fitness to golf which changed the game in terms of lengths of shots which affected golf course designs

People like Spieth and McIkroy are playing golf because of Tiger

He had been the most transcendent player in the history of golf

He is the Jordan, the Muhammad Ali of golf

Yup. Tiger will never be "old news" and, as much as people want to crown these guys - Rory, Spieth - neither has even come close to Tiger's consistent success. They haven't even sniffed it.

Tiger won't get to 18 I don't think, but if he can get healthy, he could win another major or two in his career. Nicklaus won his last at 46.

I think Tiger is done, mentally more than physically

You make a lot of good points.

He was an influencer... no doubt about it.

I personally would not put him at the level of Jordan/Ali for two reasons...

The first being both of those guys met or exceeded expectations. Woods won't accomplish that.

Ali and Jordan were also just liked by a much higher percentage of population than was Woods– Even before his incident.

Probably, but a lot can change in a year, two years, three years. I mean, if he can find the right swing to sort of compensate for his physical decline, that could prove to be a great motivator and change his whole mental state. There are a lot of things that could happen that could lead to him winning again.

Will they? Probably not. But it's not exactly outside the realm of possibility.

What expectations did Tiger not exceed? More majors than Nicklaus?

Jordan is well-known to be a prick, so I don't think you're right there. I think that Ali is the best comparable for Tiger in the way he was transcendent.

Yep the expectations were higher than 14 majors.

Jordan came off as much more likeable than Woods.

Woods = Ali?

No way.

And even if he was close to that pinnacle at one point... He lost most of it.

While that is true, some of it is because the expectations for tiger were enormous to bigin with and followed him since he was a child. Ali and Jordan did not go through quite the same as kids

You can just imagine the fortitude and mental toughness it took for tiger to live up to those expectations. The closest example I can think of is Serena Williams. She is just so much more powerful physically that it might not be quite the sane. Tiger was playing a game that was more mental than physical.

I'm not a fan of the 'man' that tiger became but I admire his accomplishments greatly

IMO he is the best golfer I have seen play and by far the 'most important' golfer to the game of golf

Ask any golf pro who is most responsible for revolutionizing the game, and they'll say Arnold Palmer.

BTW, he had enormously strong forearms and hands. Along with Arnie's athletic approach at that time, throw in little Gary Player -- the first to bring a focus on fitness to golf, and the first truly international athlete.

Another point worth making, is the fact that 2 things ruined Tiger: cheating and body building.
He may have recovered from the hits he took to his ego (narcissists frequently do). But he lost his natural gifted swing when he changed his body, and I doubt he'll ever find it. So, you have to look no farther than the new Masters champ to see that strength doesn't directly translate to length, and it certainly doesn't enable one to overpower a golf course.

He screwed himself in the gym and the bedroom -- that is the enduring lesson from his legacy.
